I consider myself pretty left learning. I don't like him, but I would never sign a petition to get rid of him, I just don't watch or listen to him. I know plenty of people do like him and that's fair enough - things would be pretty boring if everyone had the same opinion.

People who make a lot of noise on social media like to think they are representative of the population simply because they got a lot of likes, retweets or signing of petitions.  Some opinions in this thread seem to suggest that people who are left leaning automatically support ridiculous social media campaigns like this which is definitely not me.

gzt: Hosking is frequently a shock jock on 7S. People do react to that kind of presentation. A petition or protest of some kind was probably going to happen sooner or later.

And, if it didn't, someone at TV1 or 7S would start one. There's no such thing as bad publicity. Worst case, you get some buzzwords like cyber-bullying to attract people's attention.

If you don't like Hosking, or Henry, or the Kardashians, don't watch their show. Less watchers = less ad income = less income for "celeb" = goodbye "celeb" (or changed behaviour)

I watch it from time to time if im there when its on, I dont see him as a shock jock. 7S is not a news reading show, its not even a news show, its an entertainment show based on current affairs. I think people need to get over it, switch channels to what they want to see, rather than play PC brigade.

We talk about freedom of speech, freedom of choice, now we want to selectively ban whoever doesnt suit our desires, morals, beliefs? The easist way to ban Hosking is to ban that channel for that half hour. Clearly that isn't happening as 7S has high ratings. Which brings it all back to a personal PC brigade by that lawyer.

The outcome? Increased ratings I suspect as others check out 7S

I'll take your word for it. I only notice him when he gets in the news for some reason, although I have to say I will probably now give the 7pm slot a go for a short time because of this ; ).

I'm a little disappointed there is no Hosking's worst moments video to go with that petition.

The internet has reduced the price consumers pay for news to it's lowest possible point which is $0.00.

You just can't expect quality at that price.

Go behind pay walls and you will still find some quality journalism.

gzt: What no link to the petition?

15,000 and climbing lol:

https://www.change.org/p/tvnz-get-rid-of-hosking-1347aa6d-8044-4a33-ba59-7fe0a5dba42b

Any predictions on how many by 7pm? ; ).

Do you think there may be a few "duplications" in such an online petition list, after all you only need to enter your name, your email address and your city in the petition on the above web site?

I wonder what verification steps are taken before a petition like this is presented to Parliament?

Fred

I see that the top comment from the supporters of the petition is from Liz Gunn (Elizabeth Cooney), who was formerly on "Breakfast" with Mike Hosking. Well, that certainly is an example of "free speech" if ever there was!

But I don't see any great conflict now between Toni Street and Mike.

Toni seems to be in her element in the program and they laugh a lot together and Toni seems to be very much in control of the situation.

They both put each other down from time to time, but they always seem to be able take the banter in good spirits which I think has helped to contribute to the high audience numbers.

I agree with those who have said Seven Sharp should be regarded as a show and that the banter between the presenters and the occasional "shock jock" approach of Mike is probably no different than you get from the presenters of similar shows.

I think the advertisers are probably not unhappy with Mike either, but these days it's so easy to "fast forward" the ads (if you have a SKY or Freeview video recorder) that I doubt whether many of the ads are watched by people any more?

Will wonders never cease? I actually agree with you on this post. I never watch Hosking, mainly because I don't like the programme format, though from what I have heard I imagine I wouldn't like him if I did. But I certainly agree that the show is 'entertainment' if it is anything, and people are entitled to watch whatever they like. I detest the pigeon-holing of people into 'left' and 'right' camps but I suppose most would consider my ideas to be on the left and I strongly disagree with the idiots behind this petition, except possibly as a symbolic form of protest. As I have made clear before, I am very much against censorship, and that means all censorship, not just those things I happen to approve of. I also think speech should be free, with possibly only very limited restrictions when it would otherwise do real damage to the vulnerable. A problem with the politics of this country is that there is very little choice other than 'left' or 'right'. I don't vote National because I don't like their policies. I don't vote Labour because I think they are just an inferior version of National. I have voted for the Greens because there was nothing better, but my heart doesn't lie there either. I am reluctant to vote for anyone who wants to ban shower heads, filament light bulbs, or obnoxious TV presenters. Such thinking betrays real arrogance and a lack of trust in the judgement and common sense of most people.

I don't want to see the likes of Hoskings and Henry gone because of censorship they are just simply very bad at what they do and especially for prime time where Hoskings assaults ones intelligence. The 7pm slot used to have good current affairs now it is just trash TV. Media works hard the sense to put Henry in the trash bin that is morning TV but they replaced a good 7pm show with a soap opera as did TVNZ.

I'd hardly call Mike Hosking a shock jock. That's like saying the lead column in Womans Weekly is controversial.

Paul Henry is marginally more shock worthy probably because he engages mouth before brain.

Really though it just reflects what a terrible PC state the world is in. If you want to be really shocked come and sit beside me in the morning and listen to my comments as I peruse the various news sites around the world.

I think he is an utter Dick but he has his own views and I accept that and I choose not to watch it and mainly because the Missus is watching Shortland street on TV2. I get more enjoyment out of the fail compilations on YouTube at this time laughing

I saw this comment which appealed to my sense of humour-

Mike Hosking can now put in his advertising blurb "occasionally outspoken and controversial" . That has a better ring to it than staid, middle of the road , conformist.

Who is this unemployed lawyer Dan Wayman, and why does he think anyone cares about his "Hosking must go for the public good to bring NZ together"

Here is his facebook page (the photo does match with his shown Google+ profile)

And it appears this is his business website (although down at present). "Dan Wayman Law is a Divorce Lawyer and Commercial or Company Lawyer based in Shanghai China.."

As I said, maybe he should focus his efforts on petitioning human rights issues in China.

nathan: Stuff were right to put his Q&A in the entertainment section

He was interviewed by Radio NZ about the Fontera Baby Formula in China a few years ago.

A comment he made in that interview

"I'll tell you something they say in China -The only thing you can believe on the front page of the (Chinese) newspaper, is the date".

Maybe he sees petitioning NZ with an NZ issue is the softer touch for his few seconds of fame?

he should go setup a petition against the Chinese government and see what happens.

It amazes me that so little is happening with news in NZ that the media party have to resort to publishing this guys brain farts.

God speed.
