We actually have no access to live broadcast type tv in the house other than watching it on a desktop computer or phone (and I don't think live tv is available that way, but might be wrong).

We have Netflix and Prime Video and that is it. It's been that way for about 2 years now and I really can't say I feel I have missed a single thing. I have not seen a TV ad in 2 years either which is an added benefit!

We have had no terrestrial reception of Freeview TV and I'm not going to get a satellite dish.

But this week I bought a "Dish-TV" Freeview / Chromecast thing at Noel Leeming for $139. It's about 3cm on a side and .75cm thick.

It's basically Android TV and *MUCH* faster than the YouTube, Netflix and Lightbox apps on my 6 year old SONY Bravia 32" 3D TV.

Your can also install all sorts other apps on it. It's a good upgrade for an older TV and includes streaming Freeview over the Internet. Except for Prime. I can't get that at all, I don't think.

You wouldn't normally see breaking local news on Youtube though, would you? I just looked and there didn't see anything about the massive fire in Auckland today.

No, you see it on instagram stories, twitter and facebook. Youtube is entertainment.

I have one of these but you can't watch world cup rugby games on the freeview channels, as it is considered a 'stream ing device'. You can only get them over UHF (or satellite I am guessing.)

Also the channel shortcuts on the homescreen no longer work, and it is hit and miss if freeview loads or not. I am wondering if the Vodafone box is any better?

I know

a bunch of people who never watch the news, and others who never miss the 6pm news.
several people who only ever watch TV One because it is the home of Coronation Street
others who love the TV3 reality shows.
and many who never watch any linear TV

Personally I love what we do with local drama and documentaries, but I can safely ignore reality TV and most sports. Having a strong local news service is critical and deserves more support and funding.

I'm still surprised that the C4/Four concept has consistently failed for Mediaworks. From a programming perspective outside of Outrageous Fortune/Westside we've seldom watched any shows regularly on TV3, but Four was a great resource of imported content.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Yes I agree, TV4 was good. I guess I was trying to make the point that a big international website like Youtube probably wouldn't cater much to local (ie, NZ) news because they simply don't need to, and the audience size is tiny (to them).

Personally, I am not cheerleading the demise of TV3 or FTA TV in general. But neither does the prospect it particularly bother me.

If they survive, good for them. If they don't, well, that's business. But I certainly don't think that the taxpayer should be expected to dip into their pocket to prop up failing business models - either TV3, or TVNZ/Maori TV if it comes to that.

Because they are still stuck in the linear world, their streaming platforms are dire both in UI and quality. I only have one tv with an antenna connection to it, its the kitchen one and I have almost no reason to turn it onto it. Some people will just have it on showing stuff because that is what they have always done. Those people are dropping in number.

Coupled with the fact that the broadcasting companies have does a lot to make their own product unpleasant to watch. Even a good programme is hard to watch then they stop it every five to seven minutes to spend four minutes shouting at viewers to "GO HARVEY, GO HARVEY!", at a volume that is much louder than the programming it interrupts. And, while I understand that advertising pays the bills, the other annoyances don't. I mean the incessant repetitions of the same promos over and over again, the "accelerated flows" where they shrink the closing credits to shout more promos at viewers, dirty great station logos smeared across the screen, and actually cutting bits out of shows to fit in yet more ads/promos.

If TVNZ and TV3 both shut down, I doubt I would even notice much. Apart from watching a couple of the delayed Rugby World Cup games I haven't watched anything live for months. The aerial feed to the living room TV doesn't even work, and hasn't since around last Christmas. I'm pretty sure it's just a new fly lead that I need to plug in, and I have a bunch in the cable box in the garage. I care so little I just haven't bothered. Between Lightbox, Netflix and my Plex server provide a much better viewing experience.

As for news bulletins, mostly I listen to the BBC radio bulletins. I would happily listen to Radio NZ. But for some reason they aren't on the Google Home platform, so having that play when I ask Google for the news while eating breakfast isn't yet an option.

I can generally get through the day without knowing 99% of what passes for local news though.

Even that fire is as impactful to my life as a similar fire in, say, Vancouver would be.

I don't watch TV anymore, there hasn;t been anything good on TV for years, MAFS, celebrity treasure island, the block, the bachelor, master chef, xfactor are all just reality TV drivel.

I prefer to watch documentaries on youtube that way I choose what i want to watch and adverts (yes i dont have adblock) are far les painful. Tom Scott is a good channel that has some really interesting videos.

I am not a mechanical engineer but I have been fascinated by this guy rebuilding a steam powered (Yes steam) workshop that he also do commercial work on

Years ago I visited Sovereign Hill and was fascinated by the steam power in the town. Steam was centrally generated and distributed around the town like electricity. Different buildings has steam 'outlets' that they could plug machines into. I had no idea something like this existed in the 19th century. There really is nothing new under the sun.

Here is reporter X talking about sports, pretending its news

Now we cut like to reporter Y located somewhere else saying effectively the same as reporter X and still calling it news

The we get a team of A,B, and C in the sports section covering what said 10 minutes ago again, each one pretending they are clever as they read their scripted lines and giggle on demand.

By the time you remove the adverts, the weather, the sports, the sports pretending to be news we end up with maybe 5 minutes of actual news

Sometimes it's so bad that the whole thing starts off with some sports persons wife having a baby and they prattle on about that for longer than we get actual news for.

If you are wanting actual news TV1, TV3, and Prime are all garbage.
