elpenguino: Such cases dont make the foreign press but the Millane case did.

This is why you're having difficulty finding anything...

Which is why suppression orders are generally effective, this case notwithstanding.

The fact that the overseas press isn’t interested in a case is not an illustration of the effectiveness of suppression orders.

The two are entirely unconnected.

How can Google return the name if no body publishes it?

Suppression orders do not limit personal exchange of information but if I don't know someone who knows, how can I find out otherwise?

You say that, but Im abroad right now and I cant for the life of me find out who this prominent New Zealander accused of sexual assault and witness tampering is.

The article you quote is nearly a year old. So is everything else referencing this case. Did he get permanent suppression beyond the 20 days? Did the suppression get suppressed? Did the case and everything relating to it get sucked into a black hole? I don't know and I imagine no-one else does. He must be pretty prominent if he has that kind of pull.

Considering the particulars of the case, there surely would have been a news report of some kind if the charges had been dropped. Unless it was suppressed, of course.

Why ?

If the charges are dropped because insufficient evidence you would get permanent name suppression to counter the theres no smoke without fire attitude your alluding to...

I don't think so but I don't really know. Even without knowing the names, I would expect that there would be some kind of reporting that the whole thing was a huge mistake. However, if you look at the reports that were published a year ago, even the prominent businessman's butler testified that something bad had happened. It doesn't seem like a case of no smoke no fire.

My personal take on it is why should this a-hole still get to keep his suppression? Grace's sexual history and everything about her and her background has been splashed everywhere, yet this creep gets to retain his privacy. How would it affect these "pending charges" he has?

If there are further charges and disclosing his name let's this sh1t head riggle out of it then the suppression is valid in my view, but nothing beyond that.

As above. Or naming him jeopardises the case against him (assuming further charges). Or it would further victimise a victim. Or to protect people (like children) who may be related/associated with him.

There are all sorts of reasons it may be given (or in this case retained).  Including the other side of the coin - which I think will go down like a cup of sick here. The suppression can be to ensure that the defendant gets a fair trial. Generally you are prosecuted and trialled on each crime separately. Previous convictions may not be relevant or able to be disclosed.

If the Police/Crown are not opposing it then I imagine that they feel its better for the public and their case for the suppression to remain.

Seems the trial was moved to the High Court ... "Two of the three defendants appeared at the High Court on Wednesday in front of Justice Simon Moore and a trial date was set for June 2, 2020."

So everything will still be suppressed quite strongly.

Radio NZ published an article on their Android app today in which the appeal of the murder charge by the unnamed guilty party was discussed.

In this article the information from the convict's lawyer contained the surname of the convict and RNZ failed to redact this. Talk about a whoopsie.

Name redacted in this screenshot to avoid making trouble for GZ

"Killer to appeal conviction and 17-year minimum jail sentence today"

I hope he gets named after this.

Still harsh that victim has been all over the news but this piece of non-human is still officially unnamed.
