Rmani:

While discussing about this with a friend, he pointed to Official Information Act. I wasn't aware of this until he told me. Looks like few people have already raised concerns about the time delays. Not sure if it would result in any action though.

Immigration more generally has been deliberately bottlenecked by the policy settings. It's not likely to change, including residency and citizenship applications.

It would be nice if DIA had a status page that said;

1. How many applications are in the queue
2. Average time to process applications in the past month(s)
3. Number of applications processed in the past month(s)

It would give some context to the expected wait. If I saw there were 20k applications in front of mine I would be mentally prepared for the long wait.

I found some good stats on residence approvals and the average approvals over the past 10 years was about 40k per year.

That more sounds like politics to be honest, labour party already make lots immigrant life miserable with new immigrations rules, the funny think is they keep changing rules every month.Those people who waiting their residence high qualified people and already settle down this country.Labour party showing us reason (covid) for the backlog but not possible with math timeframe becoming 5 time longer than before covid.As far i know we had only 1.5 month lockdown how possible this backlog getting bigger and bigger last 1 year, and its going even worse either..

That would quantify the actual delays and is unlikely.

This is extremely disruptive to life, specially that I have to travel for work and I can't because you step a foot outside you don't know what's going to happen.

@Methegod.

Can you elaborate on how this is disruptive. Surely if you're legally resident in New Zealand now then coming back in from overseas is a formality  (always has been for me).  You might have to join a slower queue to get processed at the border but what's an extra 10 minutes when you're going to be spending 2 weeks in MIQ anyway.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Sure let me explain what I mean, when I say disruptive; I didn’t mean the line for immigration at the airport is disruptive. When you have to wait for such an important decision with no clear timeline or even indication, that’s disruptive. If it was 5 to 7 months, good no problem, but now that it will take more than a year it mean you can plan for anything.

When I say “I have to travel for work but I can’t “ I mean my work requires few number of overseas travel each year. Now I can’t travel, not because of Covid but because I can’t be outside NZ while this is being processed. If there was clear timeline I could plan with my work to when I can go and come back and so on, but I can’t even do that.

I’m just frustrated cause I feel like I can’t do anything and yet at the mercy of government, the reason that I left my own country to become a Kiwi to get a way from. It might not sound logical to you but I have experienced it and it frustrates me to no limits. Anyways sorry for the rant.

I applied mid-October 2020

Received an email from DIA to confirm name, dob, etc on the 14th of July.

Still no news until now.

When I rang DIA yesterday I was told that if I wanted to travel I could but just let them know, so you might want to double check that.  It is frustrating and whilst I'm in no hurry it would be nice to have a more detailed timeline.

Took my wife a full year before she was granted a permanent residence visa.

She applied in September 2019 and was granted residence around October 2020.  We had been married 18 years, had two kids, presented evidence of 20 years worth of joint bank accounts, bills, tenancy agreements, loads of photos etc.   I went overboard with all the information supplied.  Despite all of this we had to keep providing more and more evidence.  In the end, we needed friends and family members to write letters to say it was a genuine relationship.  One of those things is described as an optional extra.

Its tough and its frustrating.  Especially when its is abundantly clear relationship is genuine.  But the thing you can do is call (and be on hold several hours) and be patient.  Its a lengthy process.

Congratulations! So about 11 months from application day to ceremony. If you don't mind what area is your ceremony and are you just the sole applicant?

Soon a new wait game for you will begin. Processing time for NZ Passport.

Yeah should be 11 months all up.

Im in Upper Hutt, Wellington.

The ceremonies are run by the local councils so its probably dependent on their schedule & frequency. Bigger councils probably have them more often. My wife had hers in Porirua when we lived there and I think there were probably 40-50 people getting citizenship + guests.

The invite doesnt specify numbers attending but its does say I can only take 2 guests due to limited venue capacity.

Bah, two weeks. Not impressive if you are having a delay brag off with someone
