Just out of interest...

What do you all think Mojo's (I really think her name is awesome and I actually trying my best to be sincere) chances are of being judged on her performance in the house? As opposed to whether she can hear or not, what equipment /staff are needed and who pays the $30,000. Come on, in terms of Govt spending that's peanuts.

I said a few posts ago I hope she becomes an MP who happens to be deaf. Does she have a chance? I personally can't stand the Greens [this ain't the thread]. Can I say she is a moron for following stupid political ideas and not be called a bigot or being against those with disabilities?

Am I completely off track claiming her own party is farming this debate in terms of her being The Deaf MP?

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Deaf is a cultural identity so both are correct. She is an MP who happens to be deaf as well as a Deaf MP.
If we the people voted her in then we need to make sure she is able to perform her job without prejudice. The 'law' that prevents Lockwood Smith from providing her this funding is not the same 'law' that allows MP's to get a pay rise whenever it suits them so, change the law, a couple of them if necessary to balance the books but get it done.

this was always just about political grandstanding. She always only wanted a tv so she could lip read, when she discovered this wasn't going to work and went to the speaker to request help, parliamentary services began investigating ways it could help her. going to the media while ways to assist her are being investigated for her is just political grandstanding.

Let's remember, Greens have a support budget of $6 million dollars.

While I feel for her, I also find it rather strange someone would want to go into a job that is solely about hearing and speaking, when she is no good at either. her selection on the list was another political grandstand.

Yet John Key can't speak properly...and look where he is?

Although, he does need 15 minders to help him.

I have no self pity, I have taken myself from being wheelchair bound to being able walk. But as I have stated I make no apologies for defending the rights of Disabled in our community.

some people can be arrogant. they are not able to understand what it is like to have disability. for me, everyone in this world are equal. those who have disabilities should have the same chance to participate with others. it is sad to read some of the comments here.

back to the topic. i still do not understand the issue why parliament/government refused to spend 30k on one MP with disability that is voted by the people/taxpayer. it costs the taxpayer $900,000 for the plastic waka.

Because, if you read the thread, you will see there is no current legal provision for it. They CAN'T do it without creating a new law, which has it's own process.

So how the heck else are deaf people supposed to get represented in parliament? To say that she should be denied her democratic right to participate in the governance process simply because of a hearing impairment is arrogant and bigoted.

Though yes, in this instance I do feel the Greens might be exploiting this a bit more than necessary.
