This is actually great. 9/9.

So what was your score.

Haven't read the whole thread.
But it's completely idiotic to change it.
Drivers in nz are bad enough with out changing something. We do not train drivers. We train people to pass a scratchy test.
Plus our towns and intersections have been designed with the current rule in place.

It is going to be an complete and utter disaster.

B.s to those going on about "the rest of the world" They have roads and intersection layouts built with that in mind.

Probably a good idea to stay off the road for a few weeks as drivers learn the new rules. I can see lots of slow speed intersection accidents.

It's idiotic that this rule has been in place for so long.

I agree that many NZ drivers are bad, that's part of the reason the current rule doesn't work. most drivers aren't "smart' enough to make it work properly.

Well actually nothing changed with the design of the roads when the current rule was introduced, so there's no issues there.

One thing that has happened is the introduction of right turning bays in preparation for the rule change, theses should have been in place years ago anyway.

I agree that we shouldn't just be making a change because that's the way the rest of the world does it, however in this case this isn't the primary reason.  The primary reason is the current rule doesn't work and causes too many accidents.

The reason it doesn't work has not changed.
The simple fact is NZ is a fail at driver training. The test needs to be made harder. Well, an actual test would be a good start

The road rule change is a good idea and with a high percentage of tourists it does make sence that we step into line.
The line from the ad agency quotes " Top of the T goes before me" - what a stunner, it rhymes. But its confusing because we've been doing that anyway since were bound by give way signs. Now this rule will apply even at uncontrolled intersections.

FROM 25/3
If you are turning left and there is more road infront of you , you dont have to give way to cars turning right into the road you are turning into.

On the other hand, if you are on a road that continues and you are turning right from the main rd into the bottom of the T , you NOW ( 25/3) have to give way to everything on that road, oncoming AND cars turning left.

This applies at uncontrolled intersections and intersections where the opposing traffic is bounded by the same controls , give way signs, stop signs and traffic lights.
Note it is extremely common for the bottom of a tee ( the part that joins the intersect rd) to be controlled by a give way sign or a stop sign, meaning the new rule wont really seem that new.

HOWEVER if you turning right at the lights and you just have a green light, you will have to wait for opposing traffic turning left ( UNLESS) they have their own give way bay ( like a free turn used to be) or YOU have a green arrow and they have a red one.

BraaiGuy:
But nobody obeys the current rules, or at least vary rarely.

Here is the current rule, red car has right of way - who does that?

I know this is an old post but if I am seeing it correctly the red car is pulling out of a shopping centre carpark or the like? My understanding is that this rule is unchanged. Anyone exiting a carpark/driveway etc must give way to all traffic.

Great effort from the Herald this morning:

"Reversal of give-way rules on New Zealand roads is six days away - and many motorists are still confused about who should yield to whom".

No, the give way rules are not being reversed.

Attention grabbing journalism at the worst.

The Red Car is technically at an unmarked intersection (doesn't matter if it is an 'actual' road or driveway of some sort) and until the 25 the red car has right of way. From the 25th, the Blue car will have right of way.

This is one of those rules that everyone got wrong, but from 25th it will be legally correct.  Under the old (current) rule the blue car must actually give way as the driveway is legally a "road", therefore the blue car must give way to traffic approaching from the right, namely the red car.  Of course no one did, and it starts getting more complicated as to what is legally a "road" but I am not going down that path here.

Great example of how the new rule will clarify a current (legally) confusing situation.

Edit:  Mrdrifter beat me to it.

Victoria, Aus, did it in the 90's... took people about 2 days to realise it made sense..
They were the only place outside NZ that still went by the stupid rules...
Vic has a higher population than NZ, and probably as many ignorant a*s*holes..
You'll get the hang of it!
