Way back I recall that the export market was for tails leaving legs etc for locals. Now I think they are exported whole and live leaving nothing.
Several months ago I borrowed a car and pre-paid for a toll. Just now got an email from the NZTA saying it was unused. Does that happen often? Did something else weird happen, like could the owner have already set up an account and it billed directly?

That is possible. I have a family member who works for a large transport company and his car rego is apparently in LTNZ system in such a way all trips under that rego are paid by the transport company. Not sure how this all works but that is a possibility. Does NZTA give you the option to transfer your pre-paid toll to e.g. your own rego?

Because money.

Recently I bought a 2m extension lead from Bunnings. It was of good quality - solid and well-made.
Stating the obvious, to manufacture this there needs to be:
Assuming it’s not a loss-leader product, how the hell can Bunnings sell this for only $3.16 and still make a profit? They must have paid only about $2 for it.
Even allowing for mass production, small individual components and bulk buying, it barely makes sense to me. If it had been $15, I would have thought that was a reasonable, OK price.

I doubt they pay $2 for it. It doesn’t make sense, you'd pay $4.90m for 2c+E flex in a 10m pack. Cheaper to buy a longer extension cord and cut both ends off.

It's not as if it's even a commodity product sold in tens of millions. It's got NZ/Oz-specific fittings - not exactly a massive market in world terms.

Economies of scale. The smaller the child, the cheaper the labour.
