Maisy:Yes, they have sent images and yes, there are now lines on the screen which are clearly visible. I am certain that the lines were not there at the time of purchase - they are too obvious to be missed. I am not happy about the idea of taking it back; this computer is now damaged and I am not willing to lose money over damages that I did not cause.

Yes, that is a fair position. That is a good decision. I suggest posting the screen photos as long as they do not contain information which identifies anyone.

There are one or two trained Apple techs who visit this forum from time to time.

OK, here we go, side by side:

Interesting that they are LIGHT lines, therefore presumably most evident when viewed against a dark desktop image. The buyer claims that I used a dark wallpaper to mask the issue...

some of these kinds of issues can disappear after monitor has warmed up too.  so if you turn it on, then go away and come back to use it later, then it may be fine.  (and old computers can take a while to boot, encouraging to switch on in advance)

So far there is no indication in this thread that this is a factor.

mattwnz: Looks like the identical problem in that video, and they too can mainly see it on the grey background. They too said that if they weren't a graphic designer they probably wouldn't notice it or care too much about it. This therefore would suggest to me that this problem was always there, and possibly wasn't caused by a knock by the buyer.

What evidence is there that problems of this class are 'always there' from when the machine is brand new and are just not noticed by the owner?

I didn't say when 'brand new', I meant possibly always there prior to the purchase. This is because it looks like it is a problem that has occurred for other people too. The fact that the video shows the identical problem on the same computer is hardly a coincidence I would think, especially with the same photoshop background. They did say in the video that if they weren't using photoshop they probably wouldn't have notice it, and it is due to the grey colour and tone being displayed, which is one of the best colours for showing monitor problems. Manufacturing defects can appear over time. Apple have done quite a few recalls for manufacturing defects that have appeared over time, and often problems like this are just in bad batches.

I have a bachelor of design (graphic design) and used the same computer in my graduation exhibition last year. I think I am qualified to notice it.

Maisy - Any update on this?

Hi there,
On the 6th they agreed to take it to a professional to determine the cause of the problem. I am yet to hear anything back, unfortunately. (Or perhaps fortunately.)

Good luck - certainly sounds like you were in a position to have seen any issue prior to the buyers pickup of the item, so it would seemed to have been caused in transit or at their end.
