We were holidaying in Whitianga with our 3 kids and some good friends with their 3 kids. We spent the day at a beautiful, classic Coromandel beach - white sands & blooming Pohutukawa trees. Our friend (who happens to be a national champion free diver) headed out off the beach and came in with a full quota of big scallops. It was getting into evening so a fire was built and turned into a make-shift BBQ - the scallops were cooked right on the beach - the most juicy, sweet, succulent scallops EVER!

Well we got given a virtually new, well specced barbeque that will do most things, I even think you could bake bread in the oven part.

When I was around 17 years old, I tried to kickstart a BBQ with lighter fluid. I squirted the stuff onto the smouldering charcoal and not much appeared to happen. In retrospect, what happened was the hot charcoal caused the fluid to evaporate. But this wasn't apparent to my juvenile self and I wasn't the type to spend much time considering things which I could not see. So I went over, confused, and lit a match to see what would happen. It took a few weeks to regrow my eyebrows and fringe, but no real damage was done (except to my pride, obviously!)

I grew up in Hamilton and around the time that I attended uni there was a real BBQ culture, especially around Christmas time. I was living in a garage and had limited food budget (I remember $10 per week sometimes) but I would make up for it by visiting a different house every night and becoming part of their families! I remember huge gatherings of 50+ people as we gather at pot-luck dinners and BBQs ... the boys (and girls) would throw frizbees and rugby balls around while the elders would man the BBQ and talk about all kinds of random things.

I really miss those days ... there is nothing quite like a good ol' kiwi BBQ! I've since moved to Auckland for work and have found the BBQ culture is somewhat lacking here ... however I do have a couple booked in for the next few weeks ;)

My camping equipment has been described as 'Caveman with Four Square' so the best barbecues I've had have been at the communal ones at campsites - probably Ohope for the win so far.

My favourite BBQ was at my home in Christchurch, we had a new BBQ that year and we were christening it for Christmas with family. Everyone brought meat and we all enjoyed ourselves with our nicely charred steaks.

Funny BBQ story, SWIM told brother in law to use hair spray to kick start the fire outside as there was no paper of kindling. Unfortunately they were not explicit that this meant light it like a flamethrower so BIL ended up spraying hairspray into the BBQ for ages then lighting it.

Boom, there was a low thud and impressive fireball and ta da, singed eyebrows for dinner!

My memory is one that sadly won't repeat because of cancer. I recall Christmas a long time back at Days Bay in Wellington with my mother and siblings. We had decided to cast the usual Xmas plan aside, and not do Christmas turkey with everyone gathered around the dinner table. It's a special memory because it's one of the last times we ever did anything like this together. My mother has gone now, but the memory of that fun BBQ at Days Bay still remains.

Favourite BBQ was on Saturdays when I would take the Kids to Bunnings where I would watch some of the free DIY demos while the kids did some craft design, then we would buy a Sausage or 2 each, complete with onion, sauce & mustard, to support some charity fundraiser.

That was when they they put the onions on top!

Sadly, we will not return now the onions are being put on first. It's just not the same. :-(

My favourite BBQ was last year with my cousins and other family members for New Years Day. We do this each year and last year we were at Long Beach and it was such an awesome time having a BBQ as well as food that is made back home through a process called lovo. Can't wait to do it again this year.

Several years ago, we bought a new BBQ for Christmas. The idea was that I'd cook a couple of chickens on it for Christmas dinner. I went all out and got hot rocks, a rotisserie etc. On Christmas morning, I proceeded to load two chickens onto the rotisserie and crank up the burners. Unfortunately, as often seems to happen at Christmas, the weather was a little inclement that day, so I had to move the BBQ mostly into the under-house garage so that it didn't get too wet. I broke the cardinal rule and decided to go upstairs and watch some festive programmes on TV as my chicken cooked to perfection.

Half an hour later, my young son came running in to advise me that the BBQ was on fire! I ran downstairs to find a raging inferno. By either good planning or good luck, I had a dry powder fire extinguisher upstairs in the kitchen, so I ran as fast as I could to grab it, sprinted back downstairs and let rip. Oh, what a mess! By the time I had extinguished the flames, what remained was a sorry sight - a mixture of blackened, charred chicken carcasses and white powder everywhere. Turns out I had made a rookie mistake. I had left the hot rocks in the BBQ and when the chicken fat dripped onto them - instant combustion!

For Christmas dinner, we chowed down on KFC that year ;) It may not have been my best BBQ, but to this day was my most memorable. Hope that counts.

A great BBQ has many elements.

I'd have to say the best BBQ I've had was a family get together at Brisbane's Koala Bushlands for my grandson's (yes grandson, I started early!) first birthday. Great setting, company and atmosphere. Wood-fired bbq supplied by Brisbane City Council (with wood), great food - bangers and burgers - and surrounded by many other groups having just as much fun.
