The previous model was a let down to the Toyota reliability name, but I believe those one's aren't so bad.

I have had a 2003 model Avensis before. Did not have any problems with it, but at about 8 years old Toyota actually did a couple of repairs on it (callbacks) that was completely free of charge. That impressed me a lot.

This one has a unlimited kms 5 year warranty, so most mechanical problems (and some others) would be Toyotas problem. That said, they seem to take pride in making sure to deal with problems when they even remotely can be at fault.

For the 2003 model they replaced the engine on a LOT of cars because they were using too much oil. The engine was swapped at about 50.000 KMs on the one I had.

I drive a manual transmission, grey, 1.3L, 1998 Mazda Demio.

I bought it in 2007 for $7995 in Palmerston North.

I don't like wasting money on cars...so I use the "10/10" rule: About ten years old and under $10,000. My cars typically last a decade.

This Demio has more space and headroom for driver and passengers than the Nissan Terrano I used to own. Hard to believe, but true.

It cost $55-$60 to fill at current prices ($2.11.9 / litre at the Caltex around the corner). It does about 100km / 6 litres of petrol on the highway. If the air-con is on (very effective, too) then it does about 100km /7.5 litres.

We have the only officially imported Toyota Alphard Hybrid in NZ, a Honda Jazz and a 12 year old Pajero for farm work and towing our Ifor Williams trailer.

when I have time, I like to drive one of these:

my current ride is this jeep. first week I bought it (back in 20005/2006) I scratched the brand new paint dragging it through the forest:

the previous ride was a disco. first week I bought it, I scratched it up in the forest:

before that I had a Toyota Surf which did a lot of offroad getting me to fishing spots up the far north

before the Surf I had a '74 Mitsubishi Galant Colt GTO (2L) which I completely rebuilt engine and bogged/sanded/painted up the body. it looked something like the following, but in silver:

the first car I bought, for $200, was a sport skoda coupe. I repainted it and sold it for a large profit about 3 years later :) looked a lot like this, and was also yellow:

It's a high spec 7 seat mpv that retailed for the equivalent of NZ$80,000 when new. Not really a bus any more than an Estima! At 7l/100km it makes good economic sense if you drive 25000 km a year , too.

I used IBC Japan. I had a few friends who used them and from my virgin car importing experience it's an incredibly easy process. The hardest part is waiting for the ship to arrive :-)
