I have a list of things that I have never regretted spending good money on, and it strikes me that there must be a heap of things that seem expensive, but actually make great sense... So here's my small list for starters.

- LASIK eye surgery
- Lotus 7 replica
- 1 Series Canon DSLRs
- 300 F2.8L lens
- Keeping my smartphone up to the current generation
- Chain block for garage
- SSD for desktop PC
- Huge Monitor
- Heat pump
- Main hot water pressure system (installed just yesterday)
- Decent cordless drill
- Nice projector

Not necessarily in order, although LASIK is definitely in 1st place.

So what have you bought that might seem like an extravagance, but in hindsight was worth every cent?

Cheers - N

I recently spent a few thou on training for my dog. I know I will never regret it. She has just turned 2 years old and in a month of training she learned:
- pick up the TV remote, keys, or any item for which I have taught her the name and bring it to me
- take my socks off (she did start learning to put socks on so sometimes she takes them off and tries to put them on again)
- to bring my husband's wheelchair to him, navigating any corners and hazards along the way
- to take washing out of the washing machine and put in into the washing basket
- to pull a jumper off a person
- reinforced all the basic obedience commands

She taught herself how to turn the washing machine on and thinks this is a great game so I am encouraging her to do this on command (and not just when she wants to watch the washing going around). All in all, this was a very worthwhile spend.

Interested to know why LASIK was a waste - did it not give the outcome you were expecting or did it go wrong?

I think that this iPad mini that I'm typing this on is a waste of money - what were apple thinking by not putting in a better display? The size is excellent but the display quality is subpar for the small screen size.

See it's this damn small screen didn't read it properly - out of interest how much did you pay for LASIK

Unless someone else ninja-edited, then you have it backwards - I'm saying LASIK was the best money I ever spent... It was about $6000 for both eyes in mid 2008... The outcome was better than I could have expected. There were a few months of minor night-time haloing, but that's gone and I have better than 20/20 vision in both eyes...

Cheers - N

My mother cursed me with expensive tastes and I've never really regretted buying anything of good quality. The very odd gadget that sits around unused like RC Helicopters etc. One of my best purchases ever was a kindle, I have had every generation except the first touch one and I can't imagine not buying them ongoing.

Among my greatest loves was my first Subaru Legacy GT B Spec, and my jump from Subaru to my Audi S4.

I've often thought of doing this but don't feel confident doing it in NZ. I would go to the US or Europe for it I think.

I've never gotten into the e-readers, but I share the Subaru sentiment... I had a 1994 Legacy RS, then a 1999 GTB, and now a 2004 GTB.

I can only assume you have either a very tall dog or a front loading washing machine....!!

I had the earlier laser eye surgery called PRK. This was over 20 years ago now. No glasses for all this time. :-)

REALLY??!? Even back in 2008 we had some of the best equipment and people here... My dad as an Air Traffic Controller knew a heap of ATC and pilots that did it and had NO horror stories. I'm not sure it's rational to suggest it's worse or riskier in NZ.

Cheers - N

My wife did a LOT of research (you would understand the meaning of that if you knew my wife) and settled for doing it in NZ. She is a doctor. I would say it ranks in her top 3 purchases ever, if not the first. If I needed it done, I'd have the same people do it, in NZ.
