So I got a txt from Kiwibank on a Wednesday evening to call them re Platinum Mastercard.

 

1. By the time I saw the txt (>9pm) apparently the call centre is closed and I have to wait till the next day. - is this normal for other banks? I thought when I was with BNZ it was 24hrs, but that was a couple of years ago

 

2. They picked up a fraud but not until 3 transactions totalling 5k was processed already. By some really dodgy merchant names - I guess dodgy merchant names is not part of computer algorithms. So you have to fill out a form, to report the fraud, email, snail mail or fax it through, and wait 14 working days. Which probably means 1 month in this time of the year before I know if I'll get my money back???

 

3. Question was - where did it come from - it is a card that is only saved in secure merchant systems' servers, and never used in one off transactions, never pushed into any ATMs. My suspicion immediately goes to Aliexpress, as it is saved there, and just 24 hrs earlier I got 2 refunds processed by Aliexpress. Anyone knows whether this is a valid suspicion?

 

4. And the icing on the Kiwibank cake, I was told I get 5 free telephone calls to them a month, and then it's going to cost! 

 

So thought I'd post this?

I have had a Kiwibank Debit cars cancelled twice by them over the years.

 

Firts time, a couple of years ago, they notified me off dodgy transactions and cancelled them and the last time a couple of months ago.

 

I did not get any message and only found out when I could not use the card and phoned them.

 

I have no complaints and am happy with the service they provided.

Yes, and if Winny wants to bring NZ banking back home from the Big 4, he needs to get KB up with the play. They should have a couple of urgent, as in fraud, people working from home on 24 hours shifts for this. Just a couple, just on call would do

Kiwibank's credit card fraud detection and their processes for dealing with it are simply atrocious. I've heard and seen so many horror stories, including some other rants on here from people. I would never want to rely on a Kiwibank card as my primary credit card.

 

I've had ANZ call me within 60 seconds of a suspicious transaction (me trying to buy some tickets online and the site was blocked) and even this year had my card blocked due to a single suspicious transaction in the US (a coke vending machine) while I was actually transiting back through the US. I've had my card replaced prob 3 times in the past 5 or so years due to fraud which they've detected in every instance. I haven't had to do a single thing in every instance except wait for my new card to turn up in the mail.

 

I just wish ANZ (or any NZ bank) would offer virtual card numbers. They simply can't seem to get their head around why these are so damn amazing.

Had a better experience with Westpac, last year they phoned me one morning about a dodgy transaction overnight, after asking me some questions they cancelled my card and said a new one would be on its way.

 

But one thing I learned from this (and my advice to everyone) is that if you have an eftpos card that combines your credit card & savings accounts that you will want to have a backup "plain" eftpos card (ie not one tied to credit card).

 

The credit card took several days to be issued from some head office somewhere, so I had to quickly get a plain eftpos card, which any branch can give you.

 

But overall was very happy with the speed at which Westpac acted on this

Good advice. We are with Westpac, I have the MasterCard and the EFTPOS card. And their banking app I find to be excellent.

Umm it's not cheap. The reason was they have the most liberal airpoints and lounge pass policy. Which i don't use!

Nope. I've never filled out a single form with ANZ to dispute a transaction. Their fraud analytics has been so good that every time I've had a suspicious transaction and had my card replaced it's been ANZ who have blocked the transactions so I've needed to do nothing.

So they cut off your access to your money with no warning and that was not a complaint? I would be screaming at them.

This is interesting. So if they cancel your credit card, they also cancel it's ability to function as an eftpos card? Good thing Kiwibank is so behind the times, it can't offer a combined credit/eftpos card!

 

 

 

Re: ANZ's fraud detection - they probably have a bit of an advantage being much larger in NZ and having Australian operations - they would get a lot of data to feed their algorithms and would become aware of any scam that is circulating pretty quick

There would be a reason why they felt they needed to be that liberal.

 

To me it doesn't qualify as a proper bank, more of a political vanity project.

I don't remember if the card was unable to function at all, but I surrendered it at the bank a few hours after the notification so needed a plain eftpos card to get me through.

 

Not sure how the credit card functions in regard to tying all the accounts together
