As of today JB Hifi it is $449,  Photowarehouse $495, and Smiths City $699.   (This is the 'stripper' edition of Canon's entry level DSLR with the plastic lens mount, no Dioptre control, and a 230k low resolution LCD screen.  The photos it takes are probably perfectly fine as it has the same lens and sensor as some of their other recent entry level models)

On Pricespy you won't find any price higher than what Smiths City are charging for the DSLR.   I am struggling to think of a likely customer for that $699.00 deal.   Even a person with money to burn checks prices?

I think the problem Smiths City has is that they have too many prices like that.

Yes, Smiths has this issue - they go to market with a price the market knows is too high.

A couple of weeks ago they were running TV commercials for the PS4 (I think, it might have been XB) at $449. JB et al were doing them for $399.

That has to hurt - not cheap to run TV Commercials that aren't going to generate any sales.

On that Camera, I think I saw it under $400 on Black Friday - probably be the same on spendy Wednesday next week.

FWIW I have been living in NZ (Auckland) for nearly 6 years and I had never heard of Smith's City until your post - don't recall ever having seen one.

Assuming pricing like that is probably why!

They were in Auckland many many many years ago (Remember going in to drool over the C64's), then vanished from most centers except South Island.

They've made a comeback in Auckland.

There is one at Wairau Park, and, I think, somewhere around Sylvia Park?

RNZ business news at lunchtime reports Smiths City made a $100000 loss but with increased turn-over.

Possibly Smiths City doesn't have the buying power of JB?

I see this kind of thing all the time.

So many things on the price comparison sites are hundreds of dollars apart. Don't these shops carry out simple competitive analysis?

Their customers surely do.

> Canon 3000D would you like to pay $449 or $495 or $699?

Given Canon's world leading position against customer privacy, I would refuse any of their imaging products even if offered (say) a thousand dollars to take them.

The price is moot.

Just because many of us on here do a price comparison I don't think that's the case for everyone. I think there'e plenty of people who probably have never heard of Price Spy and those who shop somewhere because that's where they've always shopped.

I rather suspect the likes of Smiths City know what works for them.

Maybe furniture and electronic shiny things are incidental to finance at 23.95% per annum?

I don't know about Smiths City but I heard of one rather large second hand car group where the cars were the vehicle (excuse the pun) for selling expensive finance.

Boxing day sales at the Riccarton Mall.   Noel Leeming have that camera at $388.00 and JB Hifi are selling it at $379.00

(What Canon has done is a very similar to what Sony did with their Sony A3000 5 years ago!.   230k low resolution screen etc.   Sluggish operation..   The Canon 3000D is a much better buy but it does not interest me - I am now a Smartphone, plus tough camera type person now.)
