I think I know the answer but keen to get confirmation of the law that says so.

Basically the neighbour - without asking - is using the fence as a clothes line to dry their rug. So half of the rug is hanging over our fence.

If its not there all day every day then I see no problem. At the very least they could ask. Unless you wanted to be a bad neighbour just let it be.

I would be happy to let them do that but without asking is just plain disrespectful in my opinion. How would they want a rug over the fence in front of their bedroom window?

In most cases I'd happily take the view of a rug over wooden pails of a fence from my bedroom window. But I'm not often in my bedroom looking out the window for any considerable periods of time anyway.

My current view from my bedroom window is a construction site with 2 and 3 storey terraced housing going up. 18 months and counting.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

Seems utterly trivial IMHO and the fact that you are immediately requesting advice on the letter of the law to deal with it - rather than just talking to them first - would strongly suggest that your "Neighbourly" credentials could also do with a polish...

Edit: FYI a rug is not clothes

I think you are being a tad precious about this. It's not disrespectful as a one-off or even occasionally. It's just a practical thing. It's winter and they want it dry. If you'd agree if they asked, then there isn't really difference, both ways the rug is on the fence.

Is this really the hill you want to die on?
