I only found out yesterday that 2 gay partners cant adopt a child as a couple and that we don't allow gay marriage. I know we have civil unions but thats just not the same. Canada has no laws against gay people what so every, same with South Africa! South Africa has more rights than our country! Why doesn't our government do something? This is so unfair.

Does New Zealand have laws against homosexual people? Last time I checked we didn't. Perhaps you're confused with the legislation surrounding adoption. I would imagine the selection criteria for adoptive parents is fairly strict so it will not just be homosexual people missing out.

What benefit would you get from a homosexual marriage that you can't already get with a civil union? There are indicators that marriage is dying a slow death within the secular community anyway.

Well its not legal for two gay partners to adopt a child together. And the other people missing out are for reasons they they can most likely control, mostly because they're crap parents/druggies or whatever. Excluding a whole community is no way the same.

Wikipedia: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have most of the same rights as other people in New Zealand. At present, the remaining exceptions are the right to adopt children as a couple, and the right to marry.

Because then Brian Tamaki would bring the black T-shirts back out, and Larry Baldock would kick off another $9m referendum, and ultimately National would lose a whole lot of votes.

Sorry mate, but democracy isn't the wonderful thing that some people would have you believe and even if your cause has strong justification you might not get a lot of political support.

Separate but equal is not equal.

I'm pretty disappointed with New Zealands lack of progress in social policy. But remember how much backlash Labour got for introducing Civil Unions (Ugh, just call it Marriage and stop the stupid), legalising prostitution and closing loopholes that enabled people to beat their children.

Nor can heterosexual couples who choose a civil union rather than marriage. It's not a matter of the NZ adoption laws discriminating against gltb people - the adoption laws discriminate against everyone that doesn't fit into the model of a 1950's family. The law is 60 years old and in serious need of an update. As it is, most New Zealanders miss out (not just because of the law, but also because there's <30 adoptions every year now).

That figure was quoted by Maryan Street, Labour MP, a couple of months back when the issue of revising NZ adoption laws hit the news.

Yeah, the adoption law is stupid but I'm not sure that stat is terrible - except for people who are trying to adopt when there are so few children up for adoption. I don't know how accurate her stats are either but assume MP's get info the rest of us don't. Statistics NZ doesn't seem to publish adoption statistics.

I wonder if it's supply or demand? If it's on the supply side, then it's probably no wonder theyre not rushing to change the laws. Why increase the demand even more?

The current law doesn't allow a de-facto couple to adopt, you have to be married, or the female partner has to adopt as a single parent. The Judge is required to throw out any case where the couple aren't married under current NZ law.
