Following on from recent comment on US telcos approaches to stolen phones, I was interested in this Herald article.  Seems like a damn good "no-brainer" to me.

And that's great John - it just seemed from reading the article that there was some potential move to a more coordinated/centralised response.  If so, that has to be an incremental improvement?  Maybe I just got sucked into believing what I read - I'm usually extremely cynical - blame it on a tiring Board meeting this morning!!

according to that article a stolen vodafone phone even though blacklisted on vodafone network could still be used on telecom network and vice versa.

Hopefully the police catch the scum who broke into our local Bayfair Vodafone store and stole thousands of dollars worth of smartphones.  Hopefully Vodafone/Telecom/2 Degrees will work together and set a system where stolen phones are blocked on all networks not just the one they were for

That statement is incorrect. Data is shared between Vodafone and Telecom and has been since the launch of XT. 2degrees don't block IMEI's, hence the reason you're seeing huge numbers of handsets appearing on Trademe that say they will only work on 2degrees.

Instead of The Herald writing yet more complete and utter trailer park trash, maybe they could have looked up the words "investigative journalism", learnt whay it means, ask 2degrees why they don't block handsets, and then contact some of the sellers selling these phones (there are plenty of threads on here where people have purchased said phones) and ask why they're knowingly selling phones that have been blacklisted from NZ's two other mobile networks.

Now that would be a story... And would be a little more exciting to read than yet more stories about Katy Perry or the Kartrashians..

What a rubbish article.

Also once again 2degrees is ignored that they don't support IMEI blocking at all, something i think an article like this should be picking up.

In fact I'm surprised they didnt go all media scare tactics on it, they could have a loud blaring headline about how 2degrees doesnt want to block stolen handsets etc.

It is a rubbish article, looks like the jorno saw thre press release and wrote the article based on that, didn'tactually talk to anyone a vodafone/telcom/2D.

It seems like it was a bit of 'ohh look what we can do with technology' article rather than Voda/telecom have been doing this for a while now, 2D isn't and lets stolen phone be used on it's network
