As anyone can see, Telecom New Zealand doesn't generally hit it off at the right note with its customers. I think it's aware of it, because I learnt the expression "ABT Crowd" (anything but Telecom) from... Telecom.

Looking across the Tasman however, I think it's fair to say that Telecom isn't unique. Telstra doesn't appear to be very well-liked in Australia.

My friends in Denmark tell me Tele Danmark or TDC gets up their noses, and in Germany, Deutsche Telekom can hardly be described as popular.

Is there an incumbent anywhere that is though?

In my view it's the case of people simply hating the largest competitor in the market.

Like revolutionary leaders without a cause: "Hay gobierno? Yo soy contra".

Or maybe resenting not having competition at all?

Not having competition? "Incumbent" assume the existence of "entrant". IHUG, TelstraClear, WorldExchange, Woosh, Vodafone. Those are entrants.

Vodafone for example is much bigger than Telecom NZ in any scale. But it's still an entrant in the local market.

Incumbents in general, not Telecom specifically.

You made me go and look up the definition of incumbent again - it doesn't seem to require that there's one or more entrants. :)
