I really like Ihug, but man they seem to be having some huge technical issues as of late, first with e-mail not working on and off for two weeks, assigning private IP's when connecting and then today! a all day outtage.

From their website - looks like it's a Telecom issue, but I have had problems authenticating for a few weeks now, so whatever that finally died had been going south for a while....

They thought they had it fixed around 11am but then it died again. Still can't connect and it's 3pm.

Is anyone else having problems? non-ihug customers? (the detail says it's a Telecom ADSL fault, but Xtra and Orcon's status messages say all OK.)

Some broadband customers will be unable to connect to the internet.

Technical summary:
Telecom have advised that a problem at the Mayoral Drive exchange is causing the issue. This exchange is a core part of the ADSL broadband network and as a result the issue is affecting services nationwide.

What are we doing to resolve this?
Unfortunately this fault has reoccurred. We're working with Telecom to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We're very sorry for the disruption to your connection.

Lastest update:
Telecom are currently still investigating the problem so we can’t tell you exactly when it will be resolved. We’ll let you know as soon as we know more.

Paradise Net (via ADSL) is OK.

We also use XNet and that's OK too.

iHug is offline in Christchurch as well.

Is it coincidence that the second vodaphone waked in (or iinet walked out) some pretty major issues have raised their heads with ihug?

IHug's e-mail problems were of their own doing, they got on a SPAM relay list, their e-mail servers were in a pool of dynamic IP addresses, and they didn't have enough capacity when SPAM storm surged to 2x loads a few weeks ago.

The problems on the 11th were with them losing power to their data centre...

The problems with them handing out private IP addresses (and you then not being able to surf) also seems their fault (ISP's have their own RADIUS authentication and DHCP servers.)

The problems today with Telecom's Mayoral Drive exchange have been happening for a few weeks (for me at least PAP auth failures), and it's come to a head today when it's completely broken down. IHug say's this is a fault with Telecom's ADSL broadband network and affecting service nationwide.

BUT I don't hear of any other ISP's having issues (including Telecom's own Xtra) and Telecom taking 9.5 hours and counting to fix a problem with their core network sounds like there are either MASSIVE cascading problems, or they are taking their time as their biggest competitor gets roasted by their customers, and their helpdesks 0800 line falls off the PSTN network due to overloading.

9.5 hours is a VERY long time to get a problem in the core fixed unless your trying to cause pain to your competition.

Downer Engineering do Telecoms tech work, so either they havent found a quick solution or its just more complex. In saying that as you say no one else seems to be having problems, with the exception of Ihug, so it makes you wounder... Maybe its just Ihug...

We (Xnet) haven't seen any issues all day apart from a 15 minute problem with a RAN in Riccarton but nothing in Mayoral Drive so not sure what is broken for Ihug.

We in Papamoa (Tauranga) lost connection aswell, dial-up it was for awhile there. We are back now tho. Went to a 192.0.*.* or something like that for the IP for awhile :S

Well here it is 10:20pm and apart from a 10 minute period around 6pm the line connection is still offline. The message at iHug is that some users may not be able to authenticate due to network congestion in Auckland.

The ironic thing is out of all of this, I am on dial up (using clearnet) and the program that keeps lagging out on iHug broadband works great on dialup.

I dont know for sure but I reckon that the reason Ihug is the only ISP having the problems is because they may be connected via their ATM links to the DSL network via the Mayoral Drive exchange.
If that it is the case then it is possibly something between the connection between the ATM terminal in the exchange and the DSL terminal in the exchange. This part would indeed be a part of the core DSL network from Ihug's point of view and because its inside the exhange itself, then they cant do anything about it.

LOL! Welcome to the Great Step Backwards that is many people's broadband experience since October 26.

To be fair though, some progress is being made in resolving the issues with some of the worst affected plans (such as Xtra's Go Large), also no doubt iHug's staff will be logging lots of overtime right about now...

Their new owners (Vodafone) must be hugely embarrassed by this debacle and how long it is taking to get it sorted.

I heard it was more than the DSL that died... the editor's Wired Country connection was down too. Well, the connection was up, but he certainly couldn't pass any traffic over it.

What really gets me, is that the Ihug 0800 number had a disconnect dialtone whilst they were having these outages. Initially I got through, but only to get the somewhat ironic answer message "Welcome to Ihug; voted NZ number 1 internet service provider...".

I contacted Ihug by email to suggest that they offer their customers a reimbursement. But no word back. You would at least have expected an email to all customers explaining the situation and apologising for the problems caused. But no such customer service.

Number one ISP? Yeah, right...   Does that mean that the others are really really bad? I am seriously thinking of ditching Ihug, but who to choose instead?
