Hello!

It seems that my master splitter might have died.  At present, I have full internet access but no voice.  Chorus have tested at the demarc and it is fine, but none of the voice jacks work yet the ADSL does.  Do splitters fail?  It is less than a year old, but seems to have died last week when it was quite cold...  Do they cope ok with temperature changes?

If I was to do the cabling myself, where is the best place around West Auckland that I can pick up new cabling, splitter and clips?

Cheers,

Chris

One of the electrical wholesalers will have what you need. JA Russell, Cory's or Ideal

Should be under warranty if its less than a year old, where did you get it from?

Are you sure a connection hasn't come loose on the voice pair from the splitter?

Hi Guys,

It was installed by Chorus less than a year ago.  I've checked the wiring and all the clamps are tight and there are no lose cables.  As I don't have a maintenance fee on my wiring, if I call out Chorus to check and the splitter is fine it will be a hefty bill... and to be honest, I'm more than happy to dive in and play with the cables myself.

It could just as easily be a wiring issue.

DSL will work over a single leg, voice won't.

Yep agree with Steve, check your line stats, are they showing what they did previous or has the attenuation shot up and speed down, if so it would indicate its gone one legged.

Yeah it could be, although it wouldn't explain why all 3 jack points that are connected to the voice outlet on the splitter do not work at all, so I'm gonna get some cable and a new splitter and be done with it!

It would explain it if the wiring issue was beyind your splitter, ie in the Chorus network.

First thing is to look at your attenuation/sync and see how it looks.

Or test whether theres any dialtone when you plug a phone into the modem outlet, which would prove that your issue is likely on the telecom side of the splitter or in the connection from any alarm system that might share the phone wiring. Also check that crimps on the splitter are connected well, and perhaps test a phone on telecom side of the splitter if you are ok to reconnect the scotchloks.

In my experience splitters normally fail on the filtering which keeps voice signal going but causes problems with DSL.

Time to find a new industry!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice so far!

On the sync speeds, it does appear that I mgiht have lost around 3mbps from the sync, so down at 15, rather than the previous 18 or so.

Doesn't matter which jack I plug the telephone in to, it simply doesn't work.  Would you expect the phone to work with a filter if placed in the ADSL dedicated jack, or does the master splitter make it so that would never work?

Does the lower sync sound like a broken splitter? Chorus said we had phone and internet at the demarc, so I can only think that either all 3 phone jack cables have gone or the splitter is kaput!

You could have a single jack point pulling the others down.

Ok Cool, so the simple way to test that is to disconnect each jackpoint first?  I need to do this as I only use one of them, but the chorus guy connected all 3 up without me knowing!

Could also be in the wiring. I had one where the phone cabling went through a wet patch under the house and was causing continuous off hook.
