Hi guys, I'll be moving to Palmerston North soon for at least a year and am now looking for suitable ISP. I'll be mostly using internet for the usual stuffs (mail etc) + youtube + online gaming + streaming videos, so I'll be needing reliable, stable and reasonably high speed internet.

I have been doing plenty of research on various ISPs such as Telecom, Vodafone, Snap, Slingshot, Orcon etc. My new place is going to be around the Massey University area (Tennent Drive) and I will have to install my own home line, so if anyone can advice me which ISP to go for? I have no idea if there is any cabinet or exchange around that area for any ISP, so I'm looking to Telecom which I guess is the safest bet (i.e reliable speed and no frequent DCs or lagging etc), however I reckon it is pretty pricey (correct me if I'm wrong - $80 a month for 5gb and $95 for 50gb with the extra charge at Palmerston North). Vodafone mint pack does look pretty attractive as well. To be honest, I won't be using much home line actually so naked broadband is fine as well.

If you are living in the massey apartments on tennent drive (close to ag research) you are very lucky! The area has a cabinet all to itself with an ISAM in it meaning VDSL will be available if you want top notch speeds.
As always, I recommend Snap as you can start with ADSL and then move to VDSL without having to change ISPs. Support is great and sign up is super easy. I didn't even have to speak to anyone to change to Snap - pretty good for an ISP these days. Throughput is excellent all times of the day (see Truenet test results for proof). They have a Steam cache which I believe is zero rated - not a gamer so don't really know much about that.
Either way if you go for ADSL or VDSL you will have top line speeds with no issue, the buildings have modern wiring with just one phone jack meaning that won't be a problem.

Edit: Just to add. Snap do $5 unlimited Youtube if you use a lot of that.

And is the cabinet at that area for every ISP or just Snap? The connection and wiring is pretty expensive at $199 :S

If you want VDSL2 you need wiring that's up to spec, and a master filter if you have multiple jackpoints. A technician needs to visit, hence the cost.

Given the work that has to be done, $199 as a fixed price is fair.

OP I would also have a chat with your land lord about paying, or paying part of this fee. This work is making an improvement to their property which will be used by tenants next year.

Having said this, I recall paying more than this for text books in my first year at polytech.

The cabinet is a Chorus cabinet as is the demarcations in those buildings so you can use any provider you want. Snap is just my recommendation. The apartments are wired with one phone jack with a Cat5e each back to the Chorus demarc so wiring is not required for any DSL service. It is the best case scenario for DSL in those apartments. I know this because I did the wiring lol (well for one of the buildings anyway).

Check with local ISP Inspire too. They have many different connection options and may already have something special set up in that area for students.

The accommodation only has Chorus cable going in to it. Of course Inspire could provide the OP with their wireless service but it is rather expensive and not required as service will be much much faster using ADSL.

At the moment certainly Snap looks pretty attractive. Anyone using Vodafone(e.g Mint Pack) and how is the experience like?
