Hey i have had my fibre install booked with chorus for the 17th december I was wondering on 2 things.

A: Will chorus instal the ONT where a small extension lead will need to be run to for power as it the most suitable location in the property for it.

B: Due to the place I am in being a rental will Chorus keep the existing cooper line intact as the next tenant at way latter stage might want to get cooper services instead of fibre for some really crazy backwards reason lol.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

My understanding is that Chorus will not be physically removing any copper wiring at this point in time, but the tech will be able to advise you of their official position when he visits.

In regards to the ONT, again the tech will advise you if they have any rule about using extension cords prior to starting the work. He may insist that the ONT is placed within reach of a power socket but this will depend on what standard has been agreed to between Chorus and the service companies.

Unless there are unique circumstances the ONT will typically be installed next to the TV as it's the best place in the home for it.

Copper isn't removed during a UFB install except for unique circumstances.

Because it is in the point o the house where tv and my imac is setup

sbiddle: as it's the best place in the home for it.

If you say so... I'd rather have mine in the garage (where my DSL modem is now) so that it's out of the way. When you have the recommended star wiring I don't see why it would matter where it goes.

Straight from the basic install manual

"1. The ONT and RGW location shall be at the point of greatest data usage which shall be determined by Chorus in consultation with end-user, e.g. close to the main computer or primary TV set top box; " (NOTE - Set Top Box NOT just the TV)

"2. The ONT and RGW shall be surface mounted, preferable on an external wall, adjacent to 2 existing power outlets unless a customer provided enclosure (including power outlets) is available and the location is agreed."

The ONT Power supply has an 2.5m power cord and the power supply has a 1.5m lead to plug into the ONT / We (the installers) will negotiate with the end-user for a suitable location and supply point / 90% of the time this is where their router is already

1, We dont remove the copper service cables to the house / 1a. We Do Not remove the copper service cables to the house except when requested to do so or there is no other way to feed the property with fibre ( THis is usualy only when there is a aerial connection and the property owner only wants 1 cable or there is restictions on the number of cables that can be drawn through the conduiting)

We will disconnect the copper services if requested (on the install visit)

NOTE: Rentals - approval from the property owner is required before any work can be undertaken / This must be in writeing (emails are an approved document in this case) / This must come from the property owner - not just the property managment company / The approval the property Owner should be sort after the initial site vist from the Chorus Rep so that they can be fully informed of what may be required (trenching / hole cutting / recabling etc).

No paper work - No Install.

I've got all my Cat 5e runs terminating in the hall linen cupboard. If and when I get UFB, the ONT would have to go in there as I don't wish to re-wire it all over again.

Clearly if you have a structured cabling setup in your house then that's the most logical place for it.

If you don't have structured cabling next the TV is the most logical place in the house for an ONT as the TV is an entertainment hub for the home, and that will only grow stronger in the future.

Using the above logic the cabling must come out up through patio for my new place.

Will I need to get another contractor in to drill this hole or will the install process do this?

Our propert dosnt aloe for that as we have no garage and good luck trying to get the property owner to pay for a star wiring setup in a rental. All they after is return on there investment not wanting to put money in.

My ONT is in the dark in a basement/storage area. It is powered via an extension lead. It is connected to my router with an Ethernet cable that goes through the wall to my rumpus room. The router has an Ethernet feed to my upstairs lounge TV location. There is also a wireless router there for upstairs coverage.

I just can't see any justification for the seemingly favoured TV location. The logic used defies me. After all, whatever it feeds is done via the ONT Ethernet cable. And who cares whether that cable is two metres or 22 metres long? In any event, the ONT doesn't feed the TV/set top box. It feeds the router/switch. So, do these 'need' to be behind the TV as well?

No, there is enough junk/cabling behind my TV without any more thank you!

Dont get hung up on the example locations offered where the ONT/RGW could possibly be installed.

The possitioning of the ONT and the RGW is negotiated between the end user and the installaion team

Each of the units dont have to be in the same place. Nore do they have to share the same power point.

As long as the ONT is in a safe place (physical and environmental) and is accessable , it can in all reality be installed anywhere

Absolutely correct. My Chorus guys and I chose a site that was easy to run the fibre to and made sense for me.

You installers are tops!!
