Hi all don’t know where to put this so here will do.

I was talking to a neighbour around the road about 3 weeks ago, it was a good old yak about life, any way we got on the to subject of internet.

Now being the wooops we all ways have a bitch about speed or lack of it.
(I’m on ADSL1 about 5Mbps down and 0.85 MBPS up)

Any way the fella said that he now has ADSL 2 and that he is about the same run as I’am away from the exchange (8mbps down and about 2.1mbps up).

So i called Vodafone (our isp) they know nothing and did not want to look into it. (hit brick wall)

I’m also keen to look into finding out where our phone cable runs (I know where it is up to the gate), how does one go about that?

By the way we are off the Motukarara exchange.

Your neighbor has magic ADSL2+ if they are getting 2.1Mbps Uplink or they have changed to RBI on the mobile network! Go and see / test it yourself and see what you get using the Vodafone NZ speedtest site,

ADSL2+ in New Zealand has max 1Mbps Uplink

You have not told us what modem you are using?

What are the lines stats from the modem?

Have you got a master filter installed on the telephone line coming into the house from the road?

What does the Chorus site say for your address? http://chorus.co.nz/sat

The speeds you are getting are not that bad if you live very rural, You should be quite happy with that

Vodafone modem :P

I'm happy with the speed at my place but i would be happy with a little more speed.
Did a line test on his with www.speedtest.net

down 7.1MBPS
Up 1.5MBPS

Did not grab his modem stats (bugger should have).

Do you mean MB/s or Mb/s?

Either way, that's a faster upload than speed than ADSL2+ would deliver in NZ, so would pay to check how (s)he gets broadband.

hmm it is a fast upload... I will have to go and bug him tomorrow....

I've seen many cases recently where the speedtest.net upload results are plain and simply wrong. It's almost certainly to do with their estimations of the speed based on multiple upload threads.

Have you seen how they actually calculate the throughput they report? They discard some of the data before they even start calculating...

I've seen many examples where their test reports impossible or misleading results.

When he stops answering the door, that might be your hint ;-)

If you are able to see what modem he has, what the line stats are, and ask what ISP, that would probably answer some questions.

What happens when you put each of your addresses in the Chorus SAT?

Are you both DSL users with the same ISP? Borrow his modem.... test at your house....

I suspect there is a box of beer in your neighbours immediate future lol
