Hello
Currently I am getting 100kbps download speeds because of old phone/internet wiring. I would like to get an electrician to sort the problem out to get regular speeds. I think that the job would require a new inlet to house, new cable and about 5-6 phone outlets. (The electrician would be able to drop cable down through roof to outlets).
What should I be asking (been reading about star wiring, cat5 and master splitter?) for? and what cost would I be looking at.

There are plenty of data cable installation companies around now. They might be a better choice than a sparky, as they specalise in this kind of work.

Generally cable guys are going to be $60-$80 an hour. Cat 6 cable is around 60c a metre to the customer and PDL RJ45 modules with keystone clips are about $10 each. Also a PDL faceplate is about $15. For 4 or 5 outlets I would estimate half a day if it was under the floor. You mention coming down from the ceiling though. If you want to drill down the wall I would say it would take a day to do it that way.
In either case once the cable are run maybe another 2-3 hours to fit it all off. I would run a minimum of a 2 cables to each outlet but then a minimum of 4 to the location of the tv/home theatre. Would also run a new cable to the point of entry for Chorus and make sure there is a power outlet there for the fibre ONT to plug in to.

Which would also allow you to put the modem near the demarc, and I would recommend some kind of surge protection and/or small UPS there for the modem as well. The point is that you allow an upgrade to a cabinet at the demarc in future, so also worth putting in enough slack cable to reach a potential wall cabinet to hold your TV phone and internet gear. Generally the installer will be keen to use trunking instead of drilling down through the wall -- less chance of hitting power cables, pipes etc and reduces the unknowns.

Time to find a new industry!
