Hi Guys,

Out of couriousity i am wanting to connect PC directly to Chorus ONT.

reason - i want to know how to troubleshoot in the future and i want to know if my router or other peoples routers have a decent enough cpu to handle there connections.

i have read elseware that you can PPPoe into the ont and gain a connection - are there any how-to guides for this? - should i be using the pppoe dialer built into windows to achieve this.

VLAN10 tagging - do i need to set VLAN10 tagging on my OS anywhere to achieve connection.

i know the ont is not a router - but simply very similar to a modem, but it can not distribute DHCP.

IP address, are there specific ip's that i can set to achieve connection?

maybe someone from Chorus, telecom, vodafone, orcon, snap, has done some testing in there offices and have achieved a direct connection.

i know when the installer installed the ONT he connected directly to configure the SLID for the address, i am now wondering if he telnet'd in to the unit or if there was a web-config page.

chorus dont give any instructions for connecting directly to this unit and it would be handy if your router was dead and you wanted to test your connection.

Im not a noob - i just cant figure it out and need some help.

please dont abuse me and tell me im not suppose to directly connect to the ONT - i know this but i also want to be able to help out friends - workmates in the futute,

You need to tag all traffic and listen for traffic tagged with VLAN10

There should be no need for any other authentication, at least with an Orcon connection, not sure if others are doing something different here. Your device will get a DHCP address.

Ubergeek has summed it up for Orcon direct connection.

Couple of things to note:

Orcon will only support 1 connection at a time. (based on MAC address). If you have a LAN with multipe systems/wireless etc this will not work.

VLAN10 needs to be tagged when connected direct to the ONT.

Your PC needs to DHCP for an IP address from Orcon

The ONT's are set For Auto-Neg. Don't force your ethernet speeds or disable Auto-neg

Hope that helps.

Other ISP's will have different config. These are Orcon specific

Also note, that our helpdesk does NOT support this configuration. If you choose to go down this path you are on your own.

I can't think of a reason why you cannot connect your PC directly to the ONT. You just need to mimic the config of your router in the PC.
Yes, you'll likely need to untag VLAN 10 on the port facing the ONT and if your ISP is using PPPoE then you'll need to set that up on your PC as well.

Because you're now connecting your PC directly to the www (wild, wild, west) without the protection of the firewall that is probably on your router then it would be smart to get a good firewall up and running on your PC before you connect it to the ONT.

It's unlikely you'll be able to or need to alter the ONT config to support this option.

Also, your ISP might discourage you from connecting PC direct to the ONT.

I thought the VLAN 10 tag thing was only on Orcon. Presuming you are on Orcon, you can got o the advanced settings for your network card and there should be a VLAN tagging configuration tool there.

I'm not familiar with the specifics of either Orcon or Vodafone's settings. VLAN 10 is commonly used which is why I mentioned it.

Possibly. I'd suggest googling it for your card, there might be a utility/driver.

For WxC it's a simple pppoe connection as far as I know.

If you're on windows 7 you can set it up this way http://www.ardoros.com/2009/09/how-to-configure-pppoe-internet.html provided you know the username and password.

Just be aware that if you do this, your PC will get a publicly exposed IP address. A firewall is essential.

+1 for firewall if you're connecting to the ONT directly.

If I recall correctly, go My Computer > Right-click Network > Manage network connections > Create new connection > follow prompts to connect to Internet using broadband over PPPoE. Enter username and password, just try the default settings and see how you go.

Used to work for me using Xnet's BOF service, but haven't tried with Snap's UFB.

VLAN10 is the standard for UFB, and also for VWS. It's also used on EUBA ADSL2+ if you want native PPPoE.

Untagged UNI is an optional UFB feature, whether an ISP wants to utilise this or not is up to them and would depend entirely how their network is designed.

BoF is different to UFB. There is no requirement for VLAN tagging with BoF.

We had fibre installed today. The Chorus technicians tested web browsing and did speed tests with a laptop plugged directly into the ONT. So it is definitely possible. Connection is with Telecom.
