It's 15 months since Chorus ran fibre past my house, so I thought it time for an update.  Lee Harper at PC Media is the guy the local news media go to for UFB updates, so I dropped Lee an email this morning.  Lee told me that Chorus are having issues, but that Inspire and Pacific are working well in central Blenheim.  PC Media were the test customer for Inspire, and has been working well for the last three months.   Their pricing looks good as well.

I am 8k out of town in the main wine district off Rapaura Road (SH63).  I emailed Inspire after hearing from Lee, and they got straight back to me.  The fibre that was laid up Hammerichs road was just for the school 500 metres north of me, and that the RBI (Rural Broadband Initiative) for my area will need cabinet upgrades that will take place between July 2014 and June 2015.  So still a while to wait if you live in a Blenheim RD.

Our broadband speed averages out at 2.5Mb/s, and 500kb/s and tops out at 4Mb/s for downloads (same upload speed).

Yes there are a number of RBI cabinets planned around there by June 2015.

No, I'm eight kilometres north west of Blenheim, just off Rapaura Road (SH62) where all the wineries are.  I realised the school would be high priority, but I thought we were in with a chance because of all the businesses around here (the wineries).

I got a follow up phone call from Inspire who confirmed the timing of mid 2014 to mid 2015, but he also said that Chorus were about to upgrade the cabinet which is opposite the school 500 metres north of me, and that I'd maybe have better speed from my plain vanilla broadband.  Looking at my router stats, I think I am already getting ADSL2+, but I absolutely don't know enough to say for sure.  I'm on a 120Gb uncapped plan, so would love to do better than the 2.5Mb/s average speed I get now.

Ah right, If the fibre is running down the road you probably could get access to it but it would be very expensive for the install (thousands). If the cabinet is being upgraded you could get VDSL2 which could be 50/10mbps down/up
