So I am about to move into a new place in Peka Peka (Just north of Waikanae Beach outside Wellington) in the next few weeks and even though i checked with Chorus and they said its got ADSL etc- apparently there is a waiting list due to lack of connections on the cabinet or something...

So if I want to keep with Telecom for my broadband I may have to wait up to 6 months! and if I cancel it theyre gonna charge me $200 break fee :(

As I work from home twice a week this is a major dealbreaker.

So if i cancel my Telecom plan - Anyone had any experience with Satellite in this area? I believe Farmside, Woosh or Compass do that... before I call them up to get quotes etc would be keen to hear others experiences and if one is better than the other... or if i should just suck it up and not work from home for 6 months while i wait for Telecom or Chorus to add more capability to the existing exchange or somebody moves out!

Really appreciate any advice, this is a real downer before moving into our new house :(

Cheers

Sam

just a wee update: Called Chorus and theyre not upgrading the cabinet until July 2014 at the earliest... so i may have to wait for someone to move out before I can get a Telecom connection... might have to start blasting Rammstein out at 3am to speed up the process O.o

If you are in a 2degrees area, then their 12GB for $99 might be an option.

Look out for local wireless providers or check if any provider has decent enough mobile coverage for a Mobile Broadband service, I'd stay away from satellite due to pricing.

thanks for that - yeah i contacted voda and also chorus to see what was coming up and RBI isnt until July 2014 and its that upgrade that will also free up some space in the exchange too.

so so far ive contacted:

woosh
Telecom
Vodafone
Chorus

all basically say the same thing - get in the queue... :(

all i have left to check is farmside and compass.

Peka Peka should be in the 2Degrees Zone that runs up the Kapiti Coast to Levin,

I would grab a sim card and see what sort of reception you get ,

Could try slingshot, there may be slingshot LLU gear in the exchange you're trying to connect to. PM me your address if you're interested.

A friend of mine is in the same boat but closer to Te Horo. They used Farmside which (from memory) was $120 a month for 2GB at 2Mb or less.

They only use email and a little surfing and now have a Skinny 3G stick and pay $30 a month for 1.5GB often at speeds over 2Mb.

Not huge amounts of data by any means but it's enough for them.

cool thanks for that - i think the 3G option is going to be the best in the short term and i will just hope that I am the only one in the queue and it's just Telecom erring on the side of caution!

If you've recently moved into your place then you could possibly get them to abandon the currently connected line, which in theory would free the slot up for the next person., who is probably you

+1 stay away from satelite.
The closest fixed wireless provider in the area would be inspire but i dont think they cover down as far south.

RBI might be avaliable, mike at ultimate broadband might be able to help you. I am probably wrong but i understand they can provide RBI services ahead of when the cellphone tower is actually upgraded. If true, you would basically be getting a 3g/4g via the equipment they install without the service level guarantees.
