As above, does anyone have any experience of the Siemanns modems, especially the wireless one, that Orcon offer as part of their package? Good, bad, average?

I own about 5 of them, they're not bad, I just prefer Linksys as a brand to Siemens. They seem to be relatively stable though, especially compared to the old crappy Dynalinks orcon used to provide.

Then again, in the matters of full disclosure, I used to be an employee of Orcon, so I may be biased

Thanks for the info. Orcon are offering thewired modem for free when joining but will not creddit the difference if I get the wireless modem so looking elsewhere as the wired modem is a waste, I need wireless.
Re Linksys, what would you recommend? Is the Linksys WAG54GP2 any good?

Yep, I have the WAG54GP2, never dropped out once, and the voip is fantastic. The VoIP interface seems a little rushed and tacked on to the standard linksys interface, though, but other than that its pretty good :)

Out of interest I have just installed one of my energy telemetry systems in a large complex in Auckland, the client was asked to organise internet access for the install, and used Orcon, so I had one of these little Siemens 4200's it connect up.

The are quite compact and have a couple of rear panel slots for wall mounting. In my usual fasion I always open them up to see who lives within. In the case its a SOC (System on Chip, ie single chip) design using the Texas Instruments TNETD7300 chip, which has a reasonable reputation from all accounts. It has a ARM7 core. So at a hardware level one can assume a good starting point. The firmware is very flexible, and has SPI firwall and all the usual NAT router features. As to how the firmware stands up to use, well time will tell. It only has a single ethernet port, but for most thats not an issue as you would use a seperate switch. I did not use or care to use the USB port.

I would be interested in finding out who wholesales/retails these in NZ, as I can only find ISP's retailing them. They seem quite common in Aus.

Yes they get them through Brightpoint who do the supply chain outsourcing, same crowd who do handsets for voda and telecom.

Ahh, thanks for that, I noted my new LG chocolate was supplied by them, however it would appear there is no way an individual can purchase a SpeedStream modem outside of an ISP deal or Trademe.
