TrueNet's latest monthly report covers the normal stats, and while it shows a significant improvement for Vodafone Cable 100Mb/s services, there is a new section covering ping results from Sydney & Dallas

This is also a great report for comparing technologies, Fibre vs VDSL vs Cable vs ADSL.

Ye gods... that would explain why my Netflix goes totally pants on Vodafone cable between 8.30 and 9.30pm! WTH is that about?? The only network with that issue, and the biggest latency to the US to boot.

No it wouldn't explain it at all. A line dipping in a synthetic test does not explain why video streaming (which is typically only a few mbps and NOT that sensitive to latency) would fail to work reliably.

These are interesting numbers, but I am yet to be convinced that they reflect the user experience of being on those connections.

I can stream Netflix perfectly fine at other hours of the day. As soon as we sit down to stream something after dinner, we'll get re-buffering 3-4 times during that 8-10pm slot.

I don't claim to be an expert on this at all, merely my observations.

An increase in latency is often caused by congestion.  Congestion will cause increased packet loss.  Packet loss makes TCP go slower.  TCP going slower means video streaming over TCP (which is most of youtube/netflix/etc) not work as well.

Neil,

As a Telecom representative on the TCF Broadband Product Disclosure Working Party, it would be interesting to discover how you could "be convinced that they reflect the user experience"  Especially as you seem to be quoting a user experience that parallels the data.
