Hello, I am wanting to get broadband at my house in Big Bay but it does not appear to be covered by ground so am looking at wireless.

Having checked the forums and googled coverage it appears I can do this. Currently I get Freeview TV via the Waiatarua repeater out West Auckland, Im on a hill and clear line of site.

What are some options for me in Big Bay, RBI providers etc?

Not sure if I will go homeline and wireless broadband or just the wireless broadband

I get 3G where I am also.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Anthony,

I'll reply to you PM tomorrow, but yes should be no problem. I'm actually doing another install out that way probably next week and did one there a few months ago too.

Cheers
Fraser

Compass might have some wireless coverage around that general area, not sure but they should have coverage maps on their website.

Time to find a new industry!

Compass look like they may cover you. Reasonably priced for wireless.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Bit of an update/curve ball.

Spoke to some people down the road from me who said they have fixed line broadband. So it must be available even though when I put my address into the online address checker the website I used said it wasn't (either Vodafone or Telecom, cant remember now).

They did say it was only ADSL 1 however.

So the next Q would be is ADSK 1 faster than RBI wireless (presumably via 3G network)?

Cheers again.

I think you will find the broadband is an over subscribed Conklin with no ports available. :(

I think you could be right. Certainly a wait to hook up to it.

Even with my limited knowledge the fixed line in that part of the world sounds very average at best.

Does anyone know if 4G is coming to RBI? Just as a side Q.

Nothing official, but there has been a few comments in the media etc that tends to indicate this will probably happen at some stage.

Pretty sure compass or another WISP will cover that area. I have posted to our network operators group and will see if someone responds - I forget who the operator is in the auckland area.

Anyhow, wait before you jump into RBI - a normal WISP is usually much cheaper with bigger data allowances. Also the monthly plans start off around $50 rather than $80

Hi stonedog,

As per Ray's recommendation, feel free to check out StrataNet at www.stratanet.co.nz and also at www.facebook.com/stratanetnz. We have a transmitter right next to the TV transmission tower in the Waitakeres and would be happy to provide you with coverage.

If you're interested, drop and email to internet@stratanet.co.nz or call us on 0800 030 004.

Cheers,
Richard.

ps. Thanks to Ray for the referral!

I was out that way on Thursday doing another successful RBI install. A good 5Mbps connection. Asked about fixed line, definitely no ports available, and those who do have it say it's not really broadband.

Bit of an update.

Compass and other WISPs wouldnt work out here. Compass guy tested the system ,even installed the gear. Basically on paper "yes". In practice "no.

Ultimate Broadband RBI worked. Between 4-5Mpbs, last night was 8.9Mpbs

VOIP works well also.

Happy days. Thanks Fraser
