Looking for some insight on the fibre line that is down our rural road. I've been told before by our ISP (vodafone) that we cant get vdsl or fibre.
The chorus map shows we have fibre down our street, and we last I inquired we were just told "it's not available".

What I need to know:
~Since the line is present, can we get connected to it and have fibre plans available to the couple of units here?
~Would we be better off finding some freelance line installer or going to an ISP that can arrange the installations?
~If new lines need to be installed to our properties, how much we could expect for 100-120 meter of wiring and the work (trenching we can do)?
~If connection is successful, would we be restricted to any ISP companies? (since the fibre is owned by chorus)

We're currently on Vodafone ADSL but may look at switching to Trustpower fibre or staying with vodafone depending on our situation.

I looked into this and i have no idea how to get these sorted. I think its going to be setup for a GPON circuit in the future. But i have no idea, There was another thread but i dont think we got a conclusion.

The short answer will be 'no', sorry, unless you are near to one of the planned RBI cabinets or spend thousands of dollars.

Yes I've heard it's for the school (Paterangi School bottom left to Ohaupo School top right), but it's there so I don't see why residents shouldn't be able to hook into it also.
I might make some inquiries with ISP's tomorrow as the chorus page suggests to do, just wondered what my options were.

If Vodafone can't connect you then no retail service provider can, Read up on the crown fibre website

Schools and hospitals get priority connection

It may be possible, but expect to pay at least 5k for the install and probably more.

It is most likely a single fibre run from the roadside to the school, so it's not a case of "hooking into the existing fibre" it will be more of "run a new fibre connection back to the nearest junction box".

Happy to point you to someone at Chorus to investigate it further, but expect it to not come cheap. As UFB is being heavily subsided by CFH.

I'm pretty sure the line was part of the 'Rural Broadband Initiative (properties/farms are adjacent to the new Fibre can get connected). So there is hope.

Plambrechtsen, I might grab those details. I'll call my ISP first to see if they can help at all.

edit: Isp has given me a number to call tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how I get on just in case others have a similar question in future.

Get a gigabit to your house then setup a WiFi tower thing and resell 54Mbp/s WiFi links :)

There are a few exchanges around that area also getting upgrades, depending on how close you are to the school that area is getting VDSL for example and ADSL is not that bad. The cost to get Rural Fibre installed is indeed in the thousands and getting an ISP to serve you will be a mission, you'll need to go towards a specialised ISP like Unleash who can do Chorus handovers.

I see in that area there is 1x Conklin (1mbit area), 1x ASAM (5mbit area) and 1x ISAM (20mbit / VDSL area) - you can see what category you fall into by the Chorus maps. If you're in the area served by the Conklin it is potentially cheaper driving a car into the Conklin then lighting the Conklin modules themselves on fire (to make sure they're not reused) then lighting the car on fire to dispose of the evidence you did so then hoping that Chorus put an ISAM there instead of another damn Conklin.

If you decide to destroy a car or burn a cabinet I accept no responsibility, we'll also know it was you ;)

Contacted vodafone and had a good chat with a few of their peeps.
So yes it looks like fibre is down our street, but it may be that something isn't finished or that chorus hasn't forwarded the documents that would put us on the ISP fibre map.
It was suggested that we either wait a few months for them to get that information naturally, or to give chorus a call to inquire what the situation is.

Calling chorus the robot said to call the isp regarding those questions. So I write up a strawberry scented email and passed that along to chorus.
Hopefully they can shine some light on the possibilities.

Only if it is an "access" fibre and for that there will need to be a cabinet somewhere around you,

If it is heading to the school it is likely to be a "distribution" fibre, which you cannot have access to unless you stump up for a cabinet.

Think of the distribution fibre as like those transpower pylons out by SH38, just cause they come across your farm, doesn't mean you can plug your rotary milker into them :)

Does the map show distribution fibre in the first place? It appears that it only shows access fibre, otherwise it would presumably all be connected together rather than showing isolated chunks.

Edit: Indeed the Chorus site says "Eligible properties are those that are adjacent to the fibre routes indicated on the map below". This indicates that the OP's property is indeed able to connect.

Its a 12 fibre run to the school as part of the rbi roll out - i know couple of other schools in waikato who are offering neighbouring houses access to a wireless internet run from the schools fibre for a set price .. Maybe ask the school if they have any plans for this
