Hi,

I have an attenuation of 24.5dB, which is about 1.2km away from the exchange/cabinet. It is quite a lot shorter than this, so I was wondering if replacing the cable from the ETP into the house would possibly fix anything? Is there any way to do a isolation test from the Pillar?

Connect your modem up at the ETP, with house wiring disconnected. this will give you an idea of the shortest route.

Likely your issue is the cable goes up the road and comes back down rather than direct.

TimA is a prime example of this, despite the cabinet being at his fence-line, he does not get the connection straight from the cabinet, but from a feeder up the road.

What this means, is instead of maybe 20M of cable, he sits on over 300M of cable.

if im not mistaken, the whisper cabinets are installed with space for ULL, but its hardly economical to do so.

besides, arent you in the beginning of fibre being laid? doesnt that make vdsl moot?

I was offered it by both Spark and Orcon. If I am supposed to pass a test of 10.4dB (or something around there) the maps must be quite inaccurate. I would just like to get the speeds a bit higher.

the maps are simply an estimation..

One place i lived at last year was in the less than 5mbit zone. infact i was 500M from the cabinet, with alot of crosstalk, happily getting 35/10 with a 9db attenuation line.

a Prequal saying you can get it, and real world are two different cases.

If prequals come back as less than 10.4, then ild do a bit of digging and testing to see if your house wiring is not to blame, but it is unlikely.

Often it depends on the tech, but not all call before coming, often they will just turn up, and if there is nobody home, they sometimes make a phonecall before leaving.

Regardless, this is getting to beating the dead horse stage..

Your unlikely to be able to get vdsl. (unless something is very wrong, which is highly unlikely.)
