Today I was checking if a friend can get UFB yet and I noticed he is listed as able to get VDSL despite being a decent distance so I decided to check where I live and received mix results:

Bigpipe - ADSL/VDSL/UFB (There's no UFB in my town?)
Flip - Nothing
Orcon - ADSL
Slingshot - ADSL
Snap - Indeterminate
Spark - Nothing
Vodafone - ADSL/VDSL
Unlimited Internet - Doesn't want to check any addresses I tried

The house is 1.1KM distance from the cabinet according to google maps (map distance is following the cables pretty closely). Interestingly a house on the next street but the same or more distance away gets:

Bigpipe - ADSL/VDSL
Flip - ADSL (Although Flip don't do VDSL yet)
Orcon - ADSL/VDSL
Slingshot - ADSL
Snap - Indeterminate
Spark - ADSL/VDSL
Vodafone - ADSL/VDSL

I imagine at this distance if I could get VDSL it wouldn't be the best connection ever but it seems interesting the differing results I'm getting as I thought they would all use the same back-end for checking. I rang Snap and asked if VDSL was available and they said that they would contact Chorus and get back to me. Has anyone had a VDSL connection at around this distance?

at 22.5dB ild say your outside of the range of VDSL, although there are some pretty long lines been allowed of late.

You could take the dive, worst case your going to have a master filter installed and have a shot at getting borderline vdsl.

Get a master filter anyway. It should sort out your internal wiring and will probably help with those FEC errors.

Save your friend the headaches and don't bother with VDSL at anything over 15 attenuation. Ours fluctuated between 16-25 while on VDSL and the net was down more often then not. Had to switch back to ADSL2+.

Even if he does manage to get a stable connection, the speeds at that range would only be about 20-25/5

The Bigpipe address checker is broken.

Call up any ISP and ask them for a prequal, that will give you more accurate results.

I don't think the 22.5dB is a 100% representative as my brother had worse sync speed/attenuation then me before going on VDSL (he gets 40/10) but I think I'm probably a little over the borderline.

I'm talking about my house but anyway I would be quite happy to pay $10 extra to go from 14/1 to 20/5 if it was stable. Uploading files on 1 mbit is just painful.

I figured the Bigpipe is related to the fact Spark couldn't find what services are available and as a result it defaulted to all services. Anyway yeah I contacted Snap who contacted Chorus and will get back to me.

depends on how much upload you treasure

i had similar attenuation, got VDSL at the edge of the galaxy, and get 17/3.8 (that's a 4.5X increase in upload)

unfortuantely no UFB

Hey

this is my first post so go easy on me, I am
also looking at getting a vdsl connection at my
new house and am not sure how to find what
the distance is to the local cabinet or exchange?

I have been reading numerous posts regarding
home wiring, attenuation, copper fed cabinets vs
fibre fed and not sure where to start?

I will be upgrading the home wiring over the next
few days and then will embark on the connection
at the moment I do not have one.

Not sure I will get much help from ISP?

Can anyone put me in the right direction?

If you search for your address at https://www.chorus.co.nz/sat does it indicate if you can VDSL? That's a good starting point

1. what does the chorus map say for your address? are you in a >20mbps zone? if so you should be able to get VDSL the map is here: https://www.chorus.co.nz/network-upgrade-map toggle the UFB layers off
2. get your ISP to run a prequal on your line
3. there are a few things you can do to get a rough estimate as to what cabinet you are on and how far it is

go to the the following site: http://gis.geek.nz/infrastructure.html#chorus_cabinets input your address, change the layers to show only cabinet locations
then go to the chorus map: https://www.chorus.co.nz/network-upgrade-map and toggle so only the broadband layer is on, find your address, it should be inside a white box (loose term more of an area) that is dark brown if VDSL is avaliable. now using the GIS map find where the cabinet is in relation to the box your house resides in. then you should be able to work out the approximate distance. but remember the cables do not always take the shortest route and could go up one side and back down the other, and finally if you reside in an area that doesnt show a cabinet then you are more than likely connected to an exchange.

Pretty much if you live in an area and it shows as Dark Brown on the chorus map you "should" be able to get VDSL, there may be some exceptions for some reason or another but the best bet is talk to your ISP.

Was thinking of getting VDSL as well. But not sure about all this line info, I already got a VDSL modem but I am on ADSL2+

The cabinet is just under a Kilometer away.

This is what my Fritz Box says. I do a lot of uploading and I need a bit faster upstream if possible so was considering VDSL. If I could get it what do you estimate the speed improvement to be?

The cabinet is just under a Kilometer away.

This is what my Fritz Box says. I do a lot of uploading and I need a bit faster upstream if possible so was considering VDSL. If I could get it what do you estimate the speed improvement to be?

Your downstream attenuation of 15db matches an estimated line length of 1km+ - which is borderline for VDSL. [ideally < 12bB, < 800m]
You'll probably get unchanged down speeds and improved up speeds (eg 4x your present up speed), which is what you want.
If your house wiring is poor, installing a VDSL splitter/filter and a dedicated Cat 6 VDSL line and socket MAY improve your speeds. [do it anyway]

A minimum acceptable VDSL speed is widely considered to be 15Mbps down, 5Mbps up.

Yeh done this already but on the borderline dark brown to light brown so not sure or
confident in signing up for VDSL that i may not even get the benfits of.

Thanks Jase i followed your instructions and have managed to figure out that im probably just under 1K to the cabinet, spoke to spark
today whom recommended to just try it and give it a go to see if i get adequate speeds, the ran a prequal on the line and came up with
that suggestion, bit hit and miss really.
