I'm getting ping times from Dunedin to Auckland (60.234.8.18) of 148ms. Different house, different Orcon user (still in Dunedin - probabl a different exchange)- same ping times.

My upstream on a Max/Max is about 90-120kbps.

Notified Orcon about the problem over a week ago and they do nothing.

What can one do about this? I'm tempted to complain to the Fair Trading division at the Commerce Commission.

Anyone else in Dunedin having this problem. This whole nonsense began after my voice line was transferred from Telecom to Orcon.

I'm in Dunedin and have been with Orcon for nearly a year. Download speeds are excellent, but over the last month or so my pings have been steadily climbing. Web pages now regularly time out before loading.

I have contacted Orcon many times about it and they just deny there is a fault.

Like the time I got almost 2,000 disconnections in a week, took them long enough to admit the problem there too.

60.234.8.18 is the other end of the Orcon DSL ppp connection. Presumably in Auckland.

I have the same problem in queenstown. 6 days ago my ping and connection went to the pack. I used to get 40ms ping now i'm getting 150ms ping. It disconnected 1 night and when it came back up the speeds were crap and have stayed that way. I used to get 6mbps down and a steady 600kps up. now its at 2.5 down and 300 up. i Have just submitted a email to orcon. hopefully i hear back from them with good news.

I have changed my phoine over to orcon as well.  Telecom do something to us seem we are with orcon now

Thanks all for your replies so far. The common thread is changing our phone lines to Orcon.

I've had at least 9 support phone calls so far with Orcon trying to get this fixed - and I don't plan on stopping until it is.

What really gets me wound up about this is they refuse to lodge the fault on their status page.

Update: My full speed seems to have returned. But the ping times are still stuffed.

There's a Telecom fault for customers connecting through Dunedin RAN's that's ongoing since an outage last week.

It will be causing high pings (around 170ms where uninterleaved would normally get 30-40ms).

Think they may have fix this if this was the problem. My pings and speed are back to normal Smile
