Hello,
I live in a rural area outside of Palmerston Nth, forever weve wonted broadband. But when ive looked on the net to check to see if i can get it, it just says "wireless maybe avalible to you". meaning we can't get it. A person we know, that lives quite close to us down the road. It said he couldn't get BB, but he just complained and he got BB, all they did was just install something into the exchange.

I just rang up telecom before asking for broadband and they didn't say I could not get it. And now we are getting BB, im installing it to my PC my self but they said a technican will be going out to the exchange to enable BB.

SO can anyone get BB, just theyre too lazy to enable it???

Thanks,

I think the main reason is that for broadband you have to be close to an exchange. How further away you are from an exchange, how slower your speed will be.

So probably if you live in a rural area (where exchanges are far and between) you live too far from an exchange to get effective broadband.

I don't get your comment above, it is normal for a tech to visit the exchange / road side cabinet to enable broadband for a customer, as I understand it.

Not everyone can get fixed line ADSL or Cable Broadband, but those who can't may be able to get Broadband through one of the 3G mobile networks, or an alternative wireless service. A number of factors can prevent ADSL being delivered to an address, (as mentioned above), distance from the exchange, and capacity at the exchange just to name a few.

I think your confusing two different things here.

The tech going out to the exchange will be connecting your line up to to device which provides ADSL service. Previously Telecom had probably not installed this device.

Rural areas with their higher operation costs and lower population density are understandably further down the list of area to roll out ADSL coverage to. It is not a matter of being lazy, it is purely a return on investment decision from Telecom's part.

So THATS why rural customers cant get broadband!!

I think you will find its a matter of investment. If one person in a given area wants service, it is simply uneconomical to invest in the infrastructure required to do so.

As more and more people in an area express interest to the point where a given service becomes economical, then it becomes available.

I am sorry, but I think you jumped to conclusions without knowing how broadband works.

To get broadband you need to be close to an exchange, and the exchange must support it. Perhaps when you first asked for it the exchange didn't support, but since then it was upgraded.

As for having the technician going to the exchange to connect, this is normal procedure.

As you can see there's no reason for a "conspiracy theory". Telecom would happily provide the service and charge for it if it was possible.

What do they have to do, to make the exchange support BB?

Install a DSLAM or other similar equipment.
