Parents-in-law may want to move ISPs. Currently their area has ADSL, VDSL and fibre.

Their use is low (media is under 10GB, with a spike of 20GB a couple of months a year). Current (old) plan is [POTS line (fax only) + ADSL] plus usage. Average is around $60/month.

Looking around it's possible to get some 40GB plans for this amount, or pay a bit more and get unlimited (not that they need).

Moving to naked (since they haven't used the fax line for a while) and keeping the VFX line would save even more.

The main question... Is there a way to find if they live in an area with port waiters? It would be bad to give up their current connection and find out they're put in a waiting list.

They are around Whitby, Porirua...

Any ideas?

I thought you don't go to port waiter list/pool when changing ISP since you already have an active connection???

Even if you disconnect an existing number and go naked?

A simple billing churn wont make them go on a waiting list.

If going naked just transistion pots & bb first, then change to naked service and port number away.

I have a similar situation with my parents area - currently the waiting list is sitting on a little over a year.

Churned from Unleash (Solarix) to WXC's $99 plan and they ensured nothing will happen during the transition, in-fact the provisioning lady was well aware of the waiting list. All went through smoothly. Just gotta be careful that your old provider doesn't disconnect.

Edit: Seems weird there is a port waiter in Whitby now that UFB is available almost everywhere here. Have you taken a look if they can get UFB?

That's the thing... They have a POTS line just for the broadband service and use it for fax. Their number was previously ported to VFX because they couldn't keep it when moving through exchanges a few years back.

The number associated with POTS won't go anywhere - will return to the pool. But obviously we want to keep a broadband connection which should be with a different ISP due to current ISP plan not being the one they are after.

That's exactly the point. Making sure the receiving ISP doesn't screw up and the line is disconnected and not provisioned.

I just don't trust any ISP around these days.

Moving from Bundled ADSL to Naked ADSL will not put them into the pool again.

I didn't say there's a port waiter list - that's exactly what I'd like to find out. And as mentioned yes they can have any service but they don't want UFB - they want to keep costs around the current price which would be equivalent to a VDSL 40GB plan.

Ahh misread, my apologies!

Snap do a bundled $75 deal with VoIP phone and 30/10 UFB, 80GiB cap. Should be plenty for their needs and will likely save them further money if they're happy to move from VFX to Snap VoIP. The other one is WXC's $99 unlimited plan which will give them unlimited 30/10 UFB.

Either of those ISP's are pretty unlikely to muck up to a degree of losing their service, and both providers offer some pretty good kit (either the Fritz!Box or MP264).

Wouldn't be a problem. Was on a waiting list with a new landline number with my parents, when it got connected decided I didn't want POTS and ported out to another provider who did Naked - this was a few years ago.

They are currently with WxC. They only offer the $99 plan now. It's too much for them, seeing they spend less than this a month and don't require the speed - they only have emails and browsing.

Something around $60 - $70 would be good. Snap at $75 is not bad and the saving on the fax line would probably compensate for the bit more.

I will chat with them about this move.

If the broadband is being delivered over the Chorus copper network (i.e. a wholesaled UBA line) then there is a simple churn process that will not put the customer at risk of losing their port if there is a waiters list on their DSLAM.

As has been previously mentioned in this thread it is vital that the customer does not ask their current ISP to disconnect their broadband. The gaining ISP - the new one that you are signing up to -will take care of everything for you and notify the losing ISP - your current broadband provider - of the churn.

Port waiters are not typically found in urban areas served by ISAMs as the capacity of these boxes ensures we do not have this problem. In the rare cases where this has happened we can either augment (as there is plenty of fibre backhaul available) or, as is happening more in UFB-served urban areas, the increasing uptake of UFB fibre in these areas frees up ports on the ISAM.

Being on an ISAM there is very little chance of being port waiters in the area. The fact all of Whitby has UFB would make this even less likely.

As pointed out though a transition won't disconnect the broadband, merely move it between providers, so there is no chance of losing the connection.

Also if you go with VDSL which should come with a full install, then you can request this be done on second pair, thus leaving current connection completely intact. If going with Snap, I'd setup up as completely new connection, including new phone number, then port WxC number and cancel current connection after.
NB: you may have issues with phone number if it's outside it's LCA, so you may end up keeping VFX as standalone.
