Mums finally breaking her 1 gig onpeak and 2 gigs offpeak plan that she is on with ihug with regularity, and sooner each month so we wanted to upgrade to a bigger plan.

Now, this plan gets a $10 discount because she uses their overpriced low quality toll service.

So we want to upgrade plans, the new ones are different, and inorder to keep getting the $10 discount they want us to move our homeline to them as well. No grandfathering of the discount at all.

The second thing they will not do is remove interleaving from a connection. At all. No way. Not even if its remove interleaving or lose the account.

Is anyone else comfartable having their homephone with ihug with the impending loop unbundling meaning that it is at the mercy of ihugs equipment and the people driving it?

Anyway, the internet will be moved to xnet at the end of the month, and the cheaper calls they do (without holding us to ransom for a discount) will be appreciated since a $2 or a $2.99 capped call is a substantial saving, especially over 20-30 calls per month.

That's weird, because when I changed plans that's what I was worried about, but they let me keep my discount even though I only have tolls with them (and I don't make any toll calls anyway!).

I would have thought they would have had some loyalty to a very long term customer (over 8 years I think) - but no, they would rather not disable interleaving for "a reliable connection" or some crap, and not give the discount unless we move the homeline over.

If I recall correctly the ellerslie exchange is going to be one of the first to get unbundled, and the idea of something as important as her phoneline (old people love landlines) and the alarm etc that is on it being connected to a piece of kit run by ihug terrifies me.

They could not tell me if getting homeline off them means they could change how its provided without consulting us, as I am ok with it being a wholesaled telecom line, but not for them to be the ones providing dialtone. Then again, vodafone are not known for telling their staff anything.

ihug does not offer interleaving off option to start off with...not for ANY customer, so i dont see a reason why they should do it for you...Turning interleaving off can only make your connection even worse not better as there is a chance that no of CRC errors will increase...there is nothing wrong with the phone line option..its $1 cheaper than telecom...you need a telephone line any way so why not have it with ihug? And their so called "Low quality, high priced toll call service" has not even died once even yet for me and the call quality is very clear....and how did you come under the impression that vodafone/ihug is using $2 shop equipment in the exchanges for local loop unbundling....its a piece of hardware....if it FAILS IT FAILS....and the same applies for any other telco company....

Do whatever you want to do man.

Interleaving off improves pings by a lot, and pages definatly load less snappy on her interleaved ihug connection then on out interleaved off connection that syncs a lot slower then hers - trademe pages are the most noticable IMO, but even the herald loads sub 1 second here vs 2 seconds there, and the lower latency is good all round. Never heard of anyone having problems with interleaving off unless their connection sucked with it on.

Big deal, save $1 on the home line at the moment - who knows what will happen when they unbundle it. And yes, ihugs toll quality is below telecom. If it wasnt low quality, then modem calls would work thru it, which they dont.

I dont trust ihug to run it properly. Look how long they couldnt deleiver caller id to mobiles - that meant loads of calls had to be 059'ed at higher cost. Faxes often still have to be as well. Who knows how broken their voip service will be when they bring it in, and with no guarentees that we can stay on a wholesaled telecom line it would be stupid to move to it. Slingshot have being doing italk for years, and its only just started to be reliable, i expect similar issues with any new provider, and I dont want any part of being a customer for someone that cant handle failures of technology.

ihug are 39c to mobiles vs the 30c that other pstn toll carriers charge

ihug are $2.99 capped 3hrs to aussie whereas others are $2.

Seems overpriced to me, and I didnt notice any call issues when calling thru xnet at a mates place so it seems worth a shot.

You sound like a vodafone/ihug staff memeber thats a bit bitter.

I've been with ihug since 28 Dec last year, I've been very happy with their phone service, and it's $41 compared to Telecom's $43.

By the way, ihug's land to mobile rates are one of the cheapest!

Telecom's are even more expensive!

$43... thats strange... according to the Telecom website (they also don't have the most expensive landline to TCNZ mobile rate):

In anycase - back on topic please. Which is Vodafone/Ihug.
