Thought I'd quietly mention residential 1Gbps on the Ultrafast Fibre network (in Tauranga and Hamilton) is now available through Full Flavour.

We've got an introductory price of $99 / month.

We've had 1Gbps available at a higher rate ($129) just in Tauranga for the past 12 months.

Last week we commissioned a local NZ company to survey our existing customers. Very happy with the initial report which has given us confidence to push Gigabit broadband as more of a mainstream option.

Happy to do some Q & A if there is interest from the Gz community.

1000/20 is the limitation of UFF. The only thing these guys could offer with greater upload is 200/200.

1000/1000 is available now but only for business. With a business price tag too.

We're expecting a 1000/500 profile next year. Once Chorus work through the commercial issues associated with 1Gbps and the Dunedin plans are made nationwide, we're expecting Ultrafast will follow suit.

We service these areas with 100Mbps plans at the moment but need 20-25 users in each area requesting 1Gbps in order to justify upgrading the handovers.

You service Whanganui & New Plymouth? Tell UFF to update their site to list you as an RSP in those areas!

I'll have to add you to my list of options when my current contract expires next January. Do you offer static IPs?

Pity my aging Mikrotik is likely to hit the wall way before it reaches 1Gbps.

Pity my aging Mikrotik is likely to hit the wall way before it reaches 1Gbps.

We do static IPs on business plans. Our IP addresses are "sticky" however, they only change when doing greater reorganisations (usually associated with network upgrades).

There is new Mikrotik about to reach NZ which we'll be testing on 1Gbps. They have to do a bit of catch-up to keep up with the Ubiquiti ERL range which boasts a million packets per sec for less than $US100. Pretty familiar CLI experience if you come from a Juniper background.

Whoa! Go ufb! Anyway if i were the poster I'd take the 200/200 over the 1000/20!

Even dOing the math, Tenn times better up vs give times worser down. But once you saturate your up your down grinds to a halt so the overall effect is even stronger. All things being equal ...

they don't offer 200 up. it's 100/20 or 1000/20. (or some more expensive 100/100)

200/100 is probably the sweet spot, but most people probably wouldn't notice the difference between 1000/20 and 200/100 most of the time.

it's actually pretty easy to fix the upload speed slowing download speeds problem. just setup a linux router and do a 20 megabit queue on upload with sfq or fq_codel. with gigabit speeds to max it out nicely you probably want a pc router anyway.

Waiting for Chorus to release 1000/500 or 1000/1000 for us in Auckland as I am able to saturate a 200/200 line easily.

What router do you give your gigabit customers? PPPoE or DHCP? Is your VoIP provided on the RGW or ONT?

What we've found is there is virtually no difference between 1Gbps users and 100Mbps users when it comes to uploads.

Here's a sample of a typical 1Gbps user:

It's a one month graph and the original 5 minute samples have decayed somewhat. Long story short we could provision gig users with 5Mbps upload and most still wouldn't notice any impact on their day-to-day use.

From our survey, it seems users do notice 1Gbps particularly with anything hosted out of Sydney e.g. Google Drive, Google Play, Apple Updates & iTunes store purchases, Playstation/Xbox, Steam...

DarkShadow: What router do you give your gigabit customers? PPPoE or DHCP? Is your VoIP provided on the RGW or ONT?

Huawei HG659b and Innbox V51 V2 AC. We provision via DHCP and the VoIP is provided on the router.

I'm in Hamilton, currently with SNAP at 100/20 (but out of contract) and giving this offer serious consideration. I've just purchased 2x FritzFon VOIP handsets though which work very seamlessly in conjunction with my Fritzbox and 2talk account.

Will these handsets work ok with the router you provide?

What model Fritzbox?

Someone else here might be able to offer more insight as to whether they are compatible with other manufacturer routers.
