Hi .... yes I know, the age old question "which one to go with" but if I explain my situation some one may have a few suggestions to put me in the right direction ..?

My situation is this, I have just shifted out of New Plymouth(where I had an Xtra broadband connection) to a small lifestyle block which is too far away to get a broadband hook up, naturally I want broadband again but I'm in a bit of a quandry. I have managed to get a telecom phone connection (this is a new house) and Telecom have said they are hopeful that they'll have a fibre cable up the road going past my place in about a years time.

It would be nice to see them do this, and who knows they may be even true to their word, but in the meantime what is the best option? Next door ( about 200 yds a number of people have got together and put up a private link which I could join for about $50 a month but the very best speed would be 512 ( probably the middle of the night when no one else is on it) otherwise I gather it will be a bit slower - what are the speeds like with Vodaphone or telecom using a card modem and the mobile link..?

It would appear that if I try a a dish connection they are all abit slow except for the very expensive one and I would be up for a connection and installation that may be redundant within a couple of years .... but hey I'd like to hear any suggestions.

Tks heaps in anticipation.

Hi Hamish,

I just spotted your post while trawling through some RSS feeds which I haven't had the chance to catch up with...

I also live on a lifestyle block out of reach of ADSL broadband and have found solutions to the problems you describe.  Originally we had a landline but the local exchange is too old to support FaxAbility and Caller ID and also the voice quality is pretty bad because of electric fences on our property and neighbouring properties.

I have been using the Kordia Extend wireless broadband service for 4 years now, and about 2 years ago, ditched the landline completely and switched to VoIP for our phone service.  Since October this year, I have been using Xnet Xtencity for my ISP as they provide the broadband connection and phone service all integrated together with QoS so you don't suffer voice breakup during file downloads etc.

However, the installation cost for Xtencity is around $800 and if you are expecting to change to ADSL in a year's time it might be a bit of a waste.

When I'm away from our block, I use Telecom's EV-DO network via a Data Card in my laptop.  Just about everywhere I go these days, there is Mobile Broadband (Rev.A) coverage available, which lets me use Skype for cheap voice calls to anywhere.  The speed is also excellent -- typically over 1Mbps download and 500kbps upload.

I think that Telecom Mobile Broadband would be ideal in your situation as a stop-gap measure, but first you need to check the coverage via this map:

http://www.telecom.co.nz/binarys/north%20island%20coverage%203-0.pdf

If you are in the Yellow/Orange area you will definitely get Mobile Broadband and quite often it is also available in neighbouring areas, just depending on whether your house site is on a hilltop or in a valley.

If you are in the green area, you will get 1X coverage which is about 120kbps download and about 50kbps upload i.e. about 3 times faster than your typical dial-up connection.

If you are outside the Mobile Broadband coverage though, I would suggest that you look again at that $50 per month deal with your neighbours.  That's not a bad price to pay for 512kbps download speed, even if it drops a bit during peak time.

Anyway, there's a few ideas for you to ponder and I hope some of them will be of help.

Cheers,
Grant.

Tks a lot for your thoughts  - think you're right - next door's connection is probably the most likely option
