I live in a rural beach community. from the end of my rod (200meters) VDSL is available. My house is stuck on ADSL, both myself and wife work from home and upload speed is facempalmingly bad (0.60MBPS) downlod runs about 10, Chorusnhave no plans to improve or plans for fibre...there best suggestion was to have the community ask for it, which is tantamount to me and my neighbour.

Has anyone had any experience or know how to get chorus to pull finger and improve their boxes/extend VDSL if pestered.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

  • you have reset your modem and router
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

  • Your ISP and plan
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
  • Your general location (or street)
  • If you are rural or urban
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

Without knowing significantly more about your location there is very little anybody can do to respond to your post. In nutshell however assuming you're outside the RBI expansion footprint unless you're willing to front up with $$$ the chances of Chorus doing anything for you are absolutely zilch.

In rural areas the best solutions are wireless, which is the regulated solution for broadband, and from a huge number of wireless providers that cover NZ. I assume you've looked at these and are don't get coverage from anybody and are outside RBI coverage and have also investigated the most other obvious solution of building your own wireless link to a property that does get VDSL2?

Chorus have and will continue to expand into areas where the demand is there typically with contributions from the community. With only two of you it's safe to say you're probably going to baulk at a 6 figure cost to upgrade the infrastructure, but with only two of you Chorus will also.

Those speeds are not at all unusual for ADSL, unfortunately  - I got similar speeds (with a master filter fitted) in suburban Auckland and, later, in Wellington.

[assuming that you mean Mbps]

10Mb/s down? That's roughly what we get here in Palmerston North, and we only live 15 minutes (walk) from the center of town. The same goes for my parents in another city (although they are further out.)

Seems odd that you'd only get 0.6Mb/s up, though, if you're talking sync rates.

I would check out the Skinny Mobile Broadband offering. It's the best deal on the market right now.

New router will make little difference to upload it's the speed uplink for ADSL1 and ADSL2+

It's related to distance

Looking at Waitarere Beach on Chorus maps, almost the entire area is covered by VDSL. The remainder looks to have good ADSL coverage.

The entire area shows up as being a business fibre area - given that you are using the connection for business, there's a solution.

Almost everywhere is a business fibre area  ....

For a mere $50,000 plus several thousand a year running costs  undecided

Hi, pretty sure the Chorus presence in Waitarere Beach is in the small portacom style building on the corner of the main Waitarere beach road and Park ave, ie next to the water tank, and as mentioned by others you should have good VDSL within 800m of cable from there and top quality ADSL2+ beyond that, if not you have either a duff cable from the street or bad internal wiring.

Maybe Im looking at the wrong rod

Yes and regrettably business isn't quite booming enough to warrant those kind of costs...looks like I'm stuck with double the upload time until well into the distant future.

Just to put this in context - your 0.8Mbps upload speed (and your 10Mbps download speed) is the exact same speed that's experienced by roughly 700,000 other NZ ADSL2+ connections across NZ. A router won't change this.

There are at least a couple of options for wireless that should be accessible from Waitarere Beach that will give you faster upload speeds.
