I am currently connected with xtra - still on the go large plan.
The recent waitangi public holiday really put xtra and its infrastructure to the test, and the way they dealt with it was to traffic shape the hell out of my data.
Its was so bad that I had to get up and go and do something else.
The port was 6000 - its is used for an online game that relys on good response times, pinging the server was good (canada) 500 - 800ms, however any traffic on port 6000 was queued so far back that it made the game unplayable.

I am looking at moving to worldexchange for my internet plan, I know that they don't shape their traffic, is it likely to fix the problem - or does telecom still control the flow until worldexchange gets hold of my data?

Telecom provide a "Virtual Circuit" from the DSLAM/ISAM at your exchange to your selected ISP. There is no Port Filtering or Traffic Shaping done with the standard Unbundled Bitstream circuits in use at present.

Some ISPs such as Orcon, Woosh and Xtra implement traffic management on some of their plans for various reasons as you know.

However, Xnet don't do any traffic shaping at all because they charge a flat rate of $1.02 per GB used. Thus, it is in their interests for you to use as much data as you want.

Can you wait until ADSL 2+ is on your exchange?

It won't make any difference for users on plans such as Go Large which are traffic shaped by the ISP.

The issue you are referring to is congestion at the exchange, which is completely separate. From my own experience, it seems that Telecom have been upgrading the links on a couple of the exchanges which I use. The night-time slowdown I used to experience has now gone

I agree that it has to do with my particular plan - but it should never be so bad that I get up and walk away - esentially paying for a service that is only bad because of what my service provider is doing. I'm not downloading large amounts of data, for some reason they see fit to priorotise traffic on this particular port 6000, maybe because it has constant throughput and is not html etc.
I dont mind QOS/traffic shaping, but not to the point that there is no research done into the implications of traffic shaping certain data.

come on xtra, do some research - dont just traffic shape everything that is out of the ordinary (html)

Noone I know is experiancing any backhaul related slowdowns now, seems telecom have it sorted out well nowdays, 6 months ago several friends would see NZ pings go to 2-300 in the evenings and start to get loss - all good now.
