Just got an email from nperf telling me about an update to their service.

Here's a list of what is new (quote from the email):

Entirely coded in HTML = no more need for Flash!
Uses secure HTTPS connections
More fluid animations thanks to WebGL

What differentiates us from speedtest.net:

Works on every browser (Firefox, Chrome/Chromium, IE/Edge, Safari, Opera, Vivaldi, Maxthon...)
Using HTTPS makes the test invisible to antivirus/firewall
Results are more trustworthy, even for high speed broadband connections
More detailed results with precise curves
Complete transparency on the servers used
100% compatible with IPv6
No ad banners!

Version 1 has the Auckland My Republic server - the beta Version 2 does not.

i emailed nPerf about this last week and they replied:

We are still waiting for MyRepublic to upgrade the server software.

We hope this will be done soon …

Anyway, we’ll try to find more servers partners in NZ.

Both versions are excellent and give similar results.

And no advertising!

My nperf test to Auckland v1 (MyRepublic server - upload seems to be constrained compared to the other service below)

My speedtest to Auckland (2degrees)

Also I am on a gigabit connection and results vary wildly - I have heard speedtest.net doesn't cope well with high speed connections.

Australia only returns 100MBps on a 200Mbps connection but the real shocker as always is the UK.

Not even 1MBps upload speed - holy slow turtle speed networks batman.

Thank you very much for using nPerf :)

We identified an issue on upload test with high latency connections. This can affect tests on far far away servers.

We've fixed that in next beta (2.0.0b10). We need to do a few more testing before publishing it but this should be done before the end of the week.

I tried running on my HP Microserver (the only machine that is always connected via ethernet at home) and it didn't like that it is not WebGL-compatible, so had to use V1.

Blame your ISP... Oh, wait. Same ISP, same UK server. Frankly 100 - 120 Mbps to the other side of the world is nothing to cry about.

To Auckland, MyRepublic, same numbers as before. I wonder if MyRepublic is limited to these?

This server responds only to HI requests !

on the test-ipv6 page, so that is fine. It however refuses to test via V6, also the Myrepublic server doesn't exist with me either (literally no NZ servers). It'll be nice to see more ISP's adopt it especially those who currently have speedtest.net servers as this is a far better testing platform - also loving the no ads since Speedtest complain if you block their page full of ads with a small speedtest in the middle. Good job guys!

Approximately around 3sec, in reality 2.75sec (Chrome dev tools). Page generates a "not found" error.

I get OK upstream to the same UK server. My connection is reasonably heavily utilised currently which I suspect is degrading my results.

London (nperf was consistently climbing and a larger file size would have given a faster result, speedtest; I tested three servers and this was the best of the three)

That should not cause the issue, timeout is set to 10sec. Can you retry on b11 please?

Hmm. Using the android app, works fine over wifi(adsl) & 3g. Thought I'd see what speeds I'd get if I limited to 2g, but on 2g neither nperf.com or the app work. 2Degrees.
