Hi yo,all

Just checked my data usage on Telecom broadband and found this as below

12 Mar 2008	151.83	9.52	161.35

Note from Mar 6th to Mar 10th , i was not home. laptop and desktop were off, pda was with me down south tv was off also re sky decoder..s my question....WHERE THE HELL DID THE USAGE COME FROM?...mice using laptop when i,m away?

i,m running ADSL2+ on telecom broadband plan.

does the router itself have a broadband usage?

I've actually experienced the same thing previously.

At that time, I haven't got a wireless router installed, but it seemed to communicate to the network somehow, using around half a megabyte a day.

Here's my ihug usage during my 1 week holiday:

01-Jan-2008	0.961
02-Jan-2008	0.523
03-Jan-2008	0.569
04-Jan-2008	0.548
05-Jan-2008	0.499
06-Jan-2008	0.525
07-Jan-2008	0.567
08-Jan-2008	0.548

(Units in MBs)

So I wouldn't necessarily be surprised.

hmmmm i think when you total it up per annum it works out to a lot of megs we paying for bt not using?

Yep, but usually you wouldn't just leave your broadband for too long (in total, I haven't on broadband for about 3 weeks/year)

But, it is a large porportion: ~190MB/year

Dude no one is going to be stealing his tubes at the rate of 0.3-0.5 mb a day.

I think what you will find is that the traffic figure includes all traffic to you ip address, including pings etc.

This occurs even if your router doesnt reply or accept the incoming connections and can come from anywhere in the web

yeah of course it includes pings, L.2 control traffic (for the PPP link), ATM overhead, and any attacks that might arise from advertising yourself on BitTorrent.

Mate, you have virtually no usage over the time you were away. Its not creep, its just the stuff that keeps the connection alive.

Time to find a new industry!

I had an issue where I had a bandwidth meter on my PC, and with nothing running at all I had 5KB in/out
After I turned off uPnP on my router this traffic stopped immediately

So maybe you could give this a try if you have uPnp on

Its advertised an "always on" connection, your usage is just showing that is true :)
But yeah, its just pings/traces/script kiddies, used to get the same sort of query when I was working for IHUG all the time

My understanding is you can even pull the connection to your router, traffic is still passed across the telecom network so you get charged for any "attempted" connection (scans on that ip, pings like others have said etc..) even if your dsl isnt up to respond. But as youve found its generally very little traffic nothing worth worrying about.

If it is like that then I imagine it would only do this if you had a static ip...
