So the two different chorus maps are saying different things. Back about 2 months both stated VDSL was available, and now the Business Broadband Map still has me in a VDSL Zone

But the address lookup map doesn't

Anyone else seen this? And it isn't just my address, some issue with all of  the neighbours on my street and nearby.

Best way to get a more accurate answer is to ask your ISP for a prequal.

coffeebaron: What is your current ADSL stats? And do you have a master filter?

Yes I've got a Filter, but I know the in house wiring needs tidying up.

Using a HG659

DSL synchronization status:  Up
Connection status: Showtime
Upstream line rate (kbit/s): 1080
Downstream line rate (kbit/s): 16068
Maximum upstream rate (kbit/s): 1136
Maximum downstream rate (kbit/s): 16144
Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 12.5
Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 12.1
Upstream interleave depth: 0
Downstream interleave depth: 0
Line standard: ADSL_2plus
Upstream line attenuation (dB): 12.2
Downstream line attenuation (dB): 21.5
Upstream output power (dBmV): 12.6
Downstream output power (dBmV): 0
Downstream interleave depth: None

Or with my normal SpeedTouch modem I get

Uptime:    13 days, 22:59:46
DSL Type:    G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:    1.209 / 14.986
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]:    0,00 / 0,00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:    12,5 / 0,0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:    10,5 / 21,0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:    13,0 / 12,5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote):    TMMB / IKNS
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):    11 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):    1 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote):    0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote):    0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote):    24 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down):    66 / 0
CRC Errors (Up/Down):    66 / 749
HEC Errors (Up/Down):    0 / 674

Orcon are willing to try but I don't want to use their VOIP service.

Spark won't offer ADSL/VDSL in my area any more, only 4G

Assuming that you have a proper master filter installed in your landline wiring, rather than just a plug-in filter:

With these stats (or similar) you are not likely to get a good VDSL connection.

I tried VDSL with slightly better attenuation stats than this, but there was no performance improvement over ADSL, so i reverted to ADSL.  frown

If you can get 16Mbps on Chorus ADSL, you should be fine for VDSL. Push your provider for it.

Are you sure? They're not just hiding the DSL option behind a "more" button?

Yup. I actually went into the store and asked and their pre-qual tool says I should be getting 1MBit ADSL so I should only be offered Wireless. Interesting as I currently sync at between 14 and 16 Meg.

Wow

This does not surprise me one bit. They will make way more off selling 4G services.

As for the OP. Yes get the Prequal done. I rekon you will be able to get VDSL, its quite possible that the data they have on your property or other addresses in that area is lacking. For what its worth, I was on ADSL got about 10-11mbit, and had a noisier line than you. Was able to get 25mbit on a G.998 VDSL profile. So I suspect you will be able to get 30~50mbit. But it depends on distance and line noise and what vectoring technology is available where you are.

Why don't you want to use VoIP? Have you had problems in the past with it before? Did you know that everyone that is going to fibre is going on to a VoIP/Baseband IP Service of some sort. Do you prefer a POTS service?

My first experience with VoIP was terrible. And this was mainly down to my god awful fritz box.

But once I got the right hardware mikrotik and PAP2T, configured it correctly, its been absolutely wonderful and worked really well, even with my smartphone.

Cost of upgrading the alarm system. Seriously bad install hard wired into the current voice system. Right now I'd rather not pay to upgrade that as well as everything else.

That sounds wrong. From further comments it sounds like the prequal is clearly wrong. Unless there's some crazy edge case where the Chorus gear is only capable of 1mbps but you are on unbundled gear then you should be able to push for ADSL or VDSL. Ask for a site specific prequal and and if they still insist that you can only get 1mbps, (assuming you are with Spark at the moment) get them to log an incident for it and get their name, then forward me the info. If you're not currently with Spark, just get the name of the person and ask if they can provide a reference number for the call.

This is the second time I have heard someone say that Spark has refused to supply ADSL/VDSL (and has said 4G is the only option) and while that could be the case if the copper looks terrrrrrible, it doesn't sound right in your situation and I'd like to check.

Cheers - N

This sounds like something spark have created for themselves pushing 4G "as the only option" by the factor that they are able to get higher margins from these connections and inadvertently I am guessing paying the CSR's more commission for connecting the customer.

So It just becomes a downward spiral, as a CSR why would I suggest  a DSl connection on a less than perfect line if both they and the company can make more money from a 4G connection
It works wonders until you hit the bottom of the spiral in this situation when the service is oversold and the performance turns to custard.
