Im in Christchurch and currently have someone at home who is doing the civil works part of the install. He's just told me that they only have to the fibre 100mm deep. he hasn't even used a spade or a shovel. He's used a chainsaw to make the most shallow trench I've ever seen. He's cut through the grass/garden and has cut through the supply line for the popup lawn sprinklers. is this a normal install for enable?

What, A chainsaw to cut the lawn up hahahahahah?

Are you serious?

Step 1: Call OSH.
Step 2: Call his company and advise how he is trying to cut his leg off.
Step 3: Tresspass him from your premises before he damages anything else.

If you have any photos i would absolutely love to see them, Plus forwarding them to OSH wouldn't be a bad idea.

Wasnt one of these? Like an actual Stihl chainsaw one would use for wood?

I may be wrong here but thought Enable specified 300mm minimum? That's certainly what we have and what I was told at install (and later when we had the feed moved).

Our installer used what looked like a chainsaw as well, however it had a special digging blade attached?

Bet me to it - I'm sure this is what it was - they are actually selling them to contractors recommending for UFB installs.

That's what our Enable installer used, certainly wasn't a standard chainsaw.

I do not believe that there will be a legal requirement for minimum depth (like there is for electric cables). There is no danger to humans except perhaps tripping or strangulation.

I was not very impressed with the "workmanship" at my place either. The section between the road and my house was placed on the top of my fence rails (underneath would look better).

It would have been geared right down too. Imagine running a chainsaw at full tit and hitting a rock underground or biting a root system.
Growing up in a rural area surrounded by forestry has taught me a lot of respect for chainsaws.

in the picture where the fibre is half installed its only 40mm below ground level.

100% a chainsaw its one of stihl's little ones that you can use one handed. I own the same chainsaw.

The device isnt a chainsaw, its called an easy-trencher or Terrasaw - like a mini hand-held ditch-witch chain digger

BTW 'Chorus' min depth shallow Buried install on private property is 200mm

(and to all the trolls - yes I know that It is quite often lees that 100mm below the surface - Im on eof the ones that has to go around and fix it and did it back in properly when it gets damaged)

I've made him pull it all out. when I said to him about using a chainsaw he said they do a pass with a chainsaw to "cut the roots". He was on the phone for a couple of mins and 15 mins later the right tool was dropped off and he's now redoing it.

he's patched up the pop up sprinklers but its leaking horribly so he will need to sort that before he goes as well.

The above is what he did his first pass with before I complained and the terratrencher was dropped off.
