Hi all,

Embarking on the UFB install (finally) via Spark after it becoming available in the street and have been avidly following  posts etc. on GZ to help make this simple.

My challenge is that the install has become nonstandard due to me not accepting their proposal and to me it just does not make sense what they are proposing with respect to my current copper phone line path to the house. Some scene setting details for you all. In the first diagram below:

  • Orange line is the overhead fibre down one side of the street and branching across the road to service the other side.
  • Green line is my current copper phone line, which is underground from the pole in to the house. Note fibre is already across the road on this pole servicing the neighbour
  • Red line is the proposal as chorus network says the pit within the red ring (which is nicely flooded, see last image - right of black box near blue tape you can make out bubbles of leaking copper network according to chorus guy) is where my phone comes from and hence my my fibre. They will go up the pole near the pit across the road down that pole and underground a metre or two to my rockwall (see second image), then conduit over the wall. I will need to dig underground etc.

I have pushed back to spark who said this is now nonstandard and will provide me price...I am unsure what additional cost there will be as the labour would be the same if not less time to install, fibre is on the pole my copper comes from, no need to string across a road as they propose...??

I am keen on guidance on how to escalate further...Thanks in advance.

[edit: added image of flooded pit]

Can you please PM me with your Spark order number (or account number) and I will see what I can find out.

Installing conduit up a rock wall seems unusual for sure....

Are you saying you'd prefer it to come into your property via the green path on your illustrations?

Thanks for the response @wheelbarrow01. Yes that is my preference and initial thought that fibre would follow copper (overhead or underground). The green path would keep it nice and tidy and also dovetail in to my rack and smart wiring. I had a look again last night and there is a slight change of squeezing/drilling between rockwall and neighbours fence. This would mean running 15m along fence/garden bed and then still need to cross 4m of concrete. Interestingly, I look at neighbours across road next to proposed source pole (image 2 in OP) and then have nice grey conduit up and over their rock wall - not ideal.

PM on its way and thanks again.

Here is the view from the corner of property where copper enters (green line in first image of OP) back to the source pole.

Hi All,

A quick update for those following along. Had some great dialog with @Wheelbarrow01 and his contacts. I certainly pays to have the necessary photos/evidence to support your Ignore

Phone rang late on Thursday and my chorus scoper was around on Friday to dig a couple of pilot holes to check for conduit - unfortunately I got home just after they had finished so did not get any photos of what they found which should have been good old fashion green conduit.

Will see what the next out steps are...

Did you get to at least speak to them, or had they actually left the site before you arrived?

That flooded pit looks like a bit of a worry - I'd hope they fix that leak as soon as possible.

Missed talking to them on site by a hairs whisker and can see where they dug at base of pole and also outside my place. It was the same guy that did the original scope visit of which I have his number so will touch base tomorrow. Have another scope visit booked for Tuesday according to the system.

Update for all.

Again big ups to @wheelbarrow01 as after an email from him with an update at his end, I got a phone call (1830h) the same day from the original scoping team to come and revisit the site.

This resulted in them digging some pilot holes, discovering that I do have underground conduit - albeit the old black stuff and not the green I thought it was - that feeds my copper to the property and testing that it runs under a small rock pillar. It was noted that there was a bit of a sticking point just on my side of the pillar, but as this is dirt I have started pilot digging to sort this out.

As I missed physically catching up with them, got on the phone and he seemed to be happy with the solution and has submitted to chorus for approval - hopefully not too long now. As soon as the weather stabilizes, I will dig a couple of pilots holes on my side to assist.

I dug a pilot hole to find the conduit on my side of the fence to see if I could trace this back to the point where the chorus engineer was able to push his fibreglass snake to. Alas, I could not find anything in the area that I would have thought the conduit would travel. Back to the drawing board and possibly looking to cut more holes in the gib to find where it actually leaves the house wall and then trace....Alternatively, look at directional drilling and lay some new conduit that chorus could use from the footpath...

Interesting thread. I'm on the process of getting fibre installed and also have a pole on my property. Chorus slung conduit from the road to my pole next week and intially did there feed it down the conduit on the pole that currently carries my existing copper. Now they're saying they're going to attach the conduit directly from the pole to the house and run it down the side of the house to a box they'll install on the side of the house. I'd definitely prefer the fibre to be going the conduit.

@Dratsab Want me to get punchy? I can get punchy. They tried doing the same with our house.

@Dratsab - bit confused as to how the fibre is getting from the pole to your house. It would seem that it is going in the conduit down the side of the house based on your comments.

Yep, wrote that on my phone and missed a few key words. I'd prefer the fibre, in it's own small diameter conduit, to be run down the existing (larger) conduit my copper currently runs down - which is what they said they'd originally. Will post some pics shortly.
