Hi Folks,

I was checking my ADSL stats which are as follows:

Downstream
SNR Margin = 12, Line Attenuation = 53, Date Rate = 4653

Upstream
SNR Margin = 12, Line Attenuation = 36, Data Rate = 690

I read that ideally downstream SNR should be 30 db and no less than 23 db to avoid packet loss, disconnections etc etc. 50+ db Line Attenuation is supposed to be pretty bad as well.

For the entire time ive had adsl, it's never been higher than maybe 13 but the connection has generally been very good, very rarely have any problems.

Im in Nawton, Hamilton and i believe the closest exchange is Te Rapa. Im not sure exactly where it is or how far i am from it. How is it i have these line stats which should state that im supposed to have a crud connection but things are actually pretty good.

Anyone know how far i am from the exchange? Someone kindly want to analyze my stats?

Modem is the el cheapo D-Link DSL 502T. Would another modem improve the speed synch, SNR, Attenuation etc?

Thanks!

Your stats are fine, they just indicate you're about 4km away from the exchange.
As for signal to noise ratio, 12 is around normal, it's when it gets below say 5-6dB that issues start to occur.

As for attenuation with 'standard' loop the signal loss is about 13.81dB per km.
So, 53/13.81 = ~ 3.8km, a downstream rate of 4.6mbps is quite good for the line.
My attenuation is around 45db and i get a similar line rate around 5mbps.

On that basis i wouldn't recommed getting a new/possibly better router as although sync speeds can vary between brands it won't be a significant difference.
This site has most exchanges listed;
