I'm a part of a social club in Penrose.

Currently, we have ADSL coming in (via one analogue line) to a distribution panel.

From there, it goes out to three extensions (they ring at the same time), which we have (one in the office, one in the kitchen and one in the bar).

If we want to switch to fibre and want to keep the existing phones, we've been told that we need to keep the existing analogue line.

We can then have fibre too, but we'll end up with two bills. One for fibre and one for the analogue line.

Someone else tells me that if the router, which is provided, has an analogue port, we can just connect this to the distribution panel and we're sorted (as long as the fibre is delivered with some sort of a voice service)

But none of the providers, who I've spoken to, offer a modem with an analogue port.

Another solution would be to get a fibre solution with a voice service. And then replace the three phones, which we've already got, with DECT phones with an extender.

Ideally, we would like to keep the existing 3 phones.

Are there really no other solution than paying for both fibre and an analogue line, if we want to keep the 3 existing phones???

What ISP is this through?

Spark offer voice through the ATA port on the ONT which can plug into your existing phone wiring keeping your existing setup.

Spark only offers this to residential, from what I can understand.

chorus should install a connection point for you to plug into the existing legacy phone wiring which will allow you to connect the VOIP line. This is normally near the ONT so you can plug in either the voice port from the ONT or the phone port on your ISP supplied router.

You should be able to request this when they scope the fibre install

Hiya,

2degrees can port your number to SIP and deliver the service over Voice over IP (VOIP). This can be terminated to a Fritzbox (7490) which has analogue phone jacks (https://en.avm.de/products/fritzbox/fritzbox-7490/) or you can use an ATA (https://pricespy.co.nz/#rparams=ss=cisco%20ata) or you can purchase a DECT Fritzphone ($89) per hand set.  Instead of the monthly rental you are paying, the cost is 15$ per month (for Home Plus this includes free local calling, Caller ID, Call waiting and Voicemail). All details on options/packages are available via the signup page - https://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/broadband/#plan

I just had a look at my own ONT and yes, our phone is connected to the POTS socket.

Not sure why they (the ISP's) don't understand my query, when I speak to them.

I might need to rephrase what I'm asking about.

That is a real shame there is a lack of clarity, as this is a very simple job.i can’t answer for spark, but some of the other isp’s (like Voda) supply the HG659 with voice supplied from the analogue port out the back. They typically connect a single cordless phone to this.

Your setup is not atypical, and the key thing will be the REN - Ringer Equivalence Number - that both your phones, and the HG659 is rated for. The HG FXS ports have a REN of 4. Each device connected to it has a REN rating as a label on the bottom of the kit - it was part of telepermitting years ago. It’s typically 0.5 or 1. Fax machines could go up to 3.

The issue is none of the service providers will take responsibility for this anymore and leave it up to you to keep your kit going. Welcome to the new world, where the old is abandoned :-)

Have a look at Voda’s officenet prod... only because the person who built it used to be in my team and cared about stuff like this... when I was at Voda 5 years ago...

Yes, they should all offer this, shouldn't they?

Can you get fibre, without having the ONT box (with Chorus written on it)?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

What you are looking for is called "integrated wiring" that is the term Spark (and Chorus) use so make sure you mention on sign up you wish to have integrated wiring to liven up existing jackpoints as part of your fibre installation.

certainly is offered on the business products.

Digital and larger business products can get a little muddled but to me, your usecase sounds very simple.

provide internet and voice, single connection. Multiple handsets within the premises.

Majority of the time, this is done by default.

It's a pain to do IW at a later date. i highly suspect the sales discussion has simply been confused with calling extra handsets extensions.

Yes, you can. But it'll be outside your budget. Why don't you want an ONT box anyway?

I tend think REN is rather irrelevant these days. I would of thought it was bloody hard to find a handset that is 1 REN.

These days people at home are just buying Uniden/Panasonic DECT sets where just the base unit connected to the line and the rest are DECT.
