Knock knock... no not a joke but a Chorus rep. OK maybe a joke.

This was some weeks ago and the spiel from the door to door salesman went like this...

Chorus is offering to run fibre from the edge of your section to your house. It won't disrupt your current internet connection, but you will be able to connect to UFB when ever you want and there is no cost.

Cool I said, sounds like a good idea. I haven't had UFB installed as the house isn't networked yet, I haven't decided where I want the network cabinet and I will need to complete that before anything is installed in the house.

Rep said that wouldn't be a problem.

Turns out it was.

Installers turn up today. I pointed out where the current copper entered the house and where I thought the conduit ran. I was then asked where I wanted the modem in the house.

Installers drove off.

Woman from Chorus HQ rang an hour later to inform me that the installation had been cancelled at my request. I said I'd figured that out when the installers drove off, though they didn't actually tell me that. I also pointed out the above to her but she was completely disinterested.

Wasted afternoon

LOL@Chorus.

I'm assuming it was an ISP that informed you the above.

I don't believe Chorus has any interest in selling you fibre and using door knockers to do it..

Nope my ISP was not involved at any stage... at least I wasn't the one that contacted them.

Door to door salesman was labelled up as Chorus, and I'm sure of this because he returned two nights later having forgotten he had already visited us.

Something about this sounds very strange, as far as I am aware(unless chorus have changed how they do things) what you have described is not at all how the install process works.

This would to me be setting off alarm bells is it possible that they are thief's trying to case your property

The installers were definitely genuine.

Yeah, but Chorus doesn't deal with the consumer directly, everything is organised through the RSP.

Sounds weird..

Chorus and the LFCs have been doing proactive programs recently so it's definitely possible to get fibre installed without involving an ISP.

Correct, This is part of a regional scheme done suburb by suburb and does not involve any ISP.
They advise the customer to "Contact their ISP to have a fibre service activated once the job is completed" but it is handled directly by Chorus (Or other LFC) until this point.

Sounds like either Trustpower salesperson, or a scam.

They've both been known to go around claiming to be Chorus.

This is interesting as I haven't heard of this either, but IMO the more people that get onto fibre the better. Maybe a Chorus staff can confirm whether their reps are door knocking. There are so many scams around these days, so it would be good to know if it is genuine or not.

Streamline install. I've just had fibre ETP installed, no internal or ONT yet. This is in UFF area, not Chorus. I have heard of Chorus doing similar and up to full ONT install.
Costs them less to get as much of the install done whilst the build trucks are rolling the streets.

A relative of mine in a Chorus area had this done about six months ago. Cross lease property, neighbours ordered connection via ISP, Chorus contacted, scoped and installed up to the external FTP.

Interesting. So Chorus are going around tens possibly hundreds of thousands of premises doing installs?

I wonder who pays them, if the home owner never gets around to contacting their ISP to switch them from copper to fibre? Or is that done automatically after the install, or if the homeowner has to agree as part of the contract to do this. Don't they also remove the copper line at eh time of a fibre install?

Since copper will be switched off in the next few years, the vast majority of people will be switching over to fibre sooner or later. The small number of households who won't connect to fibre eventually would be an acceptable writeoff.
