I am on VDSL at present and I am shortly to get Chorus fibre.

The problem with VDSL after power up (after an outage) is that it take ages to connect to the WAN.

This means that my 2Talk ATA (SPA2102) can't find the WAN and gives up and we have no land line.

Manually re-powering the ATA fixes the landline.

How quickly does a Chorus ONT take to connect to a WAN?

I could invest in a UPS which would also take care of the problem.

You need to decrease the registration timer on your SPA2102 - it won't just "give up".

And I'm guessing the delay you are seeing is probably just the DSL syncing up. If the ONT powers down, it takes a lot longer to restart than just a DSL syncing up. Otherwise, if it's just the router restarting, and the ONT is up, it would connect immediately (as soon as the router requests it anyway).

Hi, cannot give you exact timing but a minute or two. As for UPS's thats a good idea, but if you ONT is some distance from the rest of you gear that needs a UPS, then one of these is a good solution just for the ONT.

Won't make any difference between VDSL2 and UFB - the root issue is your poorly configured ATA. All the better reason to use voice services from a provider who auto provisions hardware with optimal settings.

There are around 40 settings that need to be set on a SPA2102 to be configured "correctly". The SIP registration time of 3600 (1hr) is only one such setting that should be changed from the default.

I have my SPA2102 set up with 2Talk auto configuration.

It is looking like I am too impatient waiting for the long SIP Reg time :-)

How often do you get power outages? If it's often enough for this to be a problem I'd be having words with my power provider

Don't have power cuts very often.
More a surprise when we find the phone not working and callers can't get thru.
I am beginning to suspect that sbiddle may be right with my ATA config...

Set the sip registration timer to 600 (10 mins) should do it.

Pretty sure the registration expiry on my WxC VOIP lines is 180 - (3 minutes)

Looking back at my records, power outages were not the only cause of lost Sip reg.

It looks like VDSL has done a re-sync on various occasions without my HG659 powering off.

I will wait until I get fibre and look at my options with my phone and ATA settings.

Mileage will vary depending on your router. The old black orcon routers would take at least 5 minutes to recover for example.
