Hey geeks. I'm going to be upgrading from ADSL to Fibre soon. Is the correct process to order the new Fibre connection from the ISP of my choice, while simultaneously keeping my existing connection, and then cancelling my current connection only after fibre is up and running?

I use it for business so can't afford any downtime. I assume there are no issues with having both a copper and a fibre connection at the same time? Seems like the safest play even if it means I might be double-charged during that billing cycle.

Thoughts?

Ring your current ISP (assuming you want to stay with them) to order fibre, once its in then part of the process will be shutting the copper connection down

Order UFB.
Wait until it's installed.
Cancel Copper.
Be ok paying for a month of internet service as you would rather have service than being without.

YES.

If you are switching ISP, then you should definitely wait until the fibre is up and running before cancelling your ADSL.

Wait until Chorus (or whoever) says that fibre is available at your address.

As soon as fibre became available, I rang my ISP - Voyager (was on VDSL) who arranged arrange the fibre scoping.

Chorus contractors arrived at 8am on scoping day and had all the fibre and equipment installed by 11.30am.

The contractors had the fibre activated  by midday.

A day later Voyager sent an email to say that my VDSL would be discontinued 2 days later.

All pretty easy and no loss of internet.

My copper and fibre came into my house by 2 different routes.

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

In some cases Chorus will need to remove the copper to install the fibre. If that happens then you will have unavoidable downtime.

Definitely this.

I even ended up paying an early disconnection fee to my old ISP. Still happily paid that fee, as I wanted fibre as soon as it was available.

In my experience Chorus didn't show up at all on the scoping day (despite receiving a call from them the day before to confirm I'd be at home).

Now I'm wondering whether it's my responsibility to call them to rebook the scoping, or whether they will realise they missed the appointment they set.

And now I have to take another day of annual leave next time they say they might visit.

The other option you have is.

Churn copper connection from current ISP to desired ISP today as long as the desired ISP offers copper.
Request fibre once it becomes available.
You shouldn't be charged an ETF when moving access types on the same ISP.
